Description

Livorno. Cosimo III gold Doppia (Pezza d'oro Della Rose) 1717 MS63 PCGS, Florence mint, KM40, Fr-466, MIR-69. 6.93gm. The gold version of the famous "Piece of the Rose" silver type, not an off-metal production, rather a separate issue meant for circulation that made good use of the popular rosebush design. This coveted three-year type surfaces for auction only on rare occasion, providing collectors with a significant challenge, but one that is worth it in the end for such a beautiful piece. The Choice Mint State selection at present has a wonderful lustrous glimmer and a fitting rose-gold patina. Heritage has only sold two of the type in its history, both being 1718 examples, so this will be the initial offering of a first-year specimen. A meaningful selection for collectors of classic Italian gold.
