Description
1869 Five Dollar in Aluminum
Judd-776, PR65+ Deep Cameo
1869 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-776, Pollock-862, High R.7, PR65+ Deep
Cameo PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. Produced using the regular-issue
half eagle dies for the year 1869. These pieces were not actually
struck as dies trial pieces, but were deliberately struck by the
Mint for sale to collectors of off-metal sets. Struck in aluminum
with a reeded edge. Copper examples were also struck, with the same
number estimated extant (about a half dozen pieces). A single piece
in nickel is known, and apparently hasn't been seen since 1978. We
have handled three pieces since 1994, and all three were gilt;
which makes one wonder just how many actual non-gilt aluminum
pieces survive? This is a beautiful aluminum example whose surfaces
show a few tiny streaks of oxidation, but are not detracting in the
least. Aluminum patterns have a typical striking pattern, as seen
on this piece. The fields polish in the Mint to a high degree of
reflectivity, while the devices hold a significant amount of thick
white, heavily contrasting mint frost. CAC: 1 in 65, 0 finer
