1873 Ten Dollar in Aluminum
Judd-1343, PR65+ Deep Cameo

1873 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-1343, Pollock-1487, High R.7, PR65+ Deep Cameo PCGS. Ex: Simpson. The so-called regular dies trial of the regular issue ten dollar gold piece, but here struck in aluminum and with a reeded edge. These and the copper strikes were obviously not needed as true pattern coinage, but were struck by the Mint for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets. According to USPatterns.com, "fewer than 4 of each are believed to exist." This is a marvelous Deep Cameo example whose devices are strongly contrasted against the "black" mirrored fields. A thin planchet lamination is seen on the lower obverse, a common occurrence on aluminum patterns.
