1877 Morgan Half Dollar in Silver
Judd-1522, PR64
Ex: Garrett

1877 50C Morgan Half Dollar, Judd-1522, Pollock-1686, R.8, PR64 PCGS. Ex: Simpson. The obverse is similar to the Morgan dollar, but the head of Liberty is surrounded by a beaded circle, with 13 stars and E PLURIBUS UNUM around the edge. The date 1877 is below. The reverse features an eagle over a seven-pointed shield, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the left, above, and right of the shield. The entire design is enclosed within a wreath with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and HALF DOLLAR below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
The present offering is one of two known examples of Judd-1522. The other is permanently housed in the Durham Western Heritage Museum in Omaha, Nebraska as part of the Bryon Reed holdings. This example can be traced all the way back to 1883, when George Cogan sold it to Baltimore railroad tycoon Thomas Harrison Garrett. It remained with the Garrett family and then the Johns Hopkins University until 1979 and has been traded only three times at public auction since then.

Silvery surfaces exhibit delicate golden toning along with accents of blue, violet, and orange color. Stray hairlines do nothing to diminish the modest field-device contrast seen on each side. A wonderful opportunity to add this unique-in-private-hands Morgan half dollar to a high-end set.
