Description

1875 Quarter Eagle in Aluminum
Judd-1435, PR66 Deep Cameo

1875 $2.50 Quarter Eagle, Judd-1435, Pollock-1578, High R.7, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. Ex: Simpson. Traditionally described as a dies trial strike, this issue was undoubtedly produced for inclusion in off-metal collections. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Examples are also known (and more frequently encountered) in copper. With both the aluminum and copper strikes, some examples have been gilt to simulate the rare 1875 quarter eagle. Only two or three aluminum pieces are known. This is an exceptional aluminum pattern -- an exotic collectible area in U.S. numismatics if there ever was one -- whose surfaces are bright and unoxidized. A few narrow planchet streaks can be seen on each side, a common occurrence on aluminum coinage. As one would expect from the Deep Cameo designation the contrast is profound between the fields and devices. A rare pattern that has collector demand from three sources: as a pattern rarity, a rarity among aluminum patterns, and from date demand from collectors of regular U.S. coinage.
