Description

1876 Five Dollar, Struck in Copper
Judd-1484, PR65 Red and Brown
Only Two Examples Known
Ex: Bass

1876 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-1484, Pollock-1637, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. Ex: Simpson. Traditionally considered a regular dies trial striking, this was undoubtedly produced in the Mint for sale to favored collectors who were assembling off-metal sets. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The Judd reference lists this issue as also struck in aluminum, but that coin is unconfirmed, leaving only the two known copper strikes as confirmed off-metal 1875 fives. This is a bright, iridescently toned example whose fields are deeply reflective and the devices thickly frosted (yet no Cameo designation has been granted by PCGS). Fully struck throughout with no obvious or detracting contact marks.
Ex: Brinton T. Schorer to Harry Bass (2/1972); Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers & Merena 5/1999), lot 1361; Pre-Long Beach Auction (Superior, 2/2003), lot 2157.
