1873 Gold Dollar in Aluminum
Judd-1332, PR66 Cameo
Ex: Boosel-Bass

1873 G$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-1332, Pollock-1476, R.8, PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Ex: Bass-Simpson. From regular dies, but struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. There seems a very low likelihood that any serious consideration was given to striking gold dollars in aluminum in 1873. So, rather than considering these as regular dies trial strikes, it is undoubtedly more accurate to regard the aluminum (and copper) strikes from this year as pieces intentionally made for collectors of off-metal sets. USPatterns.com estimates only three or four examples of Judd-1332 are known. This is a bright, sparkling example with just the faintest tinge of golden color here and there. The cameo contrast is profound between the fields and devices on each side. CAC: 1 in 66, 0 finer (12/21).
