1878 Half Eagle in Gilt Copper
Judd-1569, PR64

1878 $5 Half Eagle, Judd-1569, Pollock-1760, Low R.7, Gilt PR64 PCGS. Ex: Simpson. The large Liberty head faces left, and has an expression similar to that of the regular issue Morgan dollar. However, her hair is tied in a bun, and she does not wear a cap or any cereal grains. The reverse features an eagle with spread wings holding an olive branch in its right talon and three arrows in its left. Differentiated from similar patterns by the letter E below the chin, no obverse periods, and IN GOD WE TRUST on the upper reverse border. Struck in copper and gilt with a reeded edge.

About a dozen Judd-1569 representatives are known, and this is one of several pieces that have been gilted. The brassy-gold surfaces of this near-Gem proof feature steel-blue and reddish accents on each side. A few hairlines are seen.
