1884 Annular Nickel in Aluminum
Judd-1725, PR66+ Cameo

1884 5C Judd-1725, Pollock-1935, Low R.7 PR66+ Cameo PCGS. Ex: Simpson. An annular (ring-shaped) pattern featuring a circle of 13 stars on the obverse surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date, 1884, below. An octagonal perforation is in the center. The reverse exhibits FIVE above and CENTS below separated by a small shield on the right and left. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. This Eastman Johnson design exists in nickel (about two dozen pieces), aluminum (about a dozen), and white metal (unique), all featuring the hand-cut central perforation. This is an attractively contrasted, high-end Premium Gem proof with just a few hints of thin golden color over otherwise bright silver surfaces. The fields are deeply reflective.
