Description

1877 Twenty Cent, PR64 Cameo
Proof-Only Issue, 510 Coins Struck

1877 20C PR64 Cameo PCGS. Twenty cent pieces were struck for circulation only in 1875 and 1876, followed by two years of proof-only production for collectors. The 1877 is the lowest-mintage twenty cent piece, with just 510 proofs struck. The short-lived series is popular with collectors today, although not nearly as popular as it was unpopular during its brief time in circulation during the mid-to-late 1870s.

This is an attractive near-Gem proof with ice-blue toning and substantial cameo contrast. As usually seen on 1877 proofs, the coin is razor-sharp throughout both sides including the upper obverse (an area that is weak on the 1878 proof-only date). Mirrored fields show a few milk-white streaks and tiny spots on the obverse, while the reverse fields are fully mirrorlike. A few faint, delicate lines in the fields do not distract. Population: 32 in 64 (1 in 64+) Cameo, 15 finer (9/19).(Registry values: N2998)
