1778-79 Brass Rhode Island Ship Medal, Unc Details
Betts-563, Branches (Wreath) Below the Ship

1778-79 MEDAL Rhode Island Ship Medal, Branches Below Ship, Brass -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Betts-563, Breen-1141, Whitman-1740, R.4. Examination of the basic varieties suggests the order they were produced and distributed. Those with the engraving anomaly having VLUGTENDE below Admiral Howe's flagship were produced first. Those include the pieces with that word scraped away. Most likely, the error pieces were not intended to be distributed, but a small number reached collectors' hands. Those pieces with VLUGTENDE removed were distributed first, and these pieces with the branches below the ship were released afterward. Hints of medium brown toning appear on this light yellow example that retains luster on both sides. Bulged planchet irregularities are noted on both sides and likely result from the production method of hot metal work. Listed on page 52 of the 2020 Guide Book.
