Description

1799/8 Dollar, B-3, BB-141, MS62
Blundered Reverse
15 Field Stars

1799/8 $1 15 Stars Reverse, B-3, BB-141, R.3, MS62 PCGS. Bowers Die State III. Perhaps the most popular of all the 1799 varieties, with the blatant overdated 8 beneath the final 9 in the date. Numerous engraver lines and die flaws include the renowned blunder of two extra field stars on the reverse, mostly hidden behind clouds 1 and 8, which were greatly oversized to hide the mistake. Tiny tips of the errant stars are readily visible. The B-3, BB-141 variety is the only die pair with this error -- the other two 1799/8 overdates show the normal-sized clouds and 13 field stars.

Pearl-white surfaces are softly lustrous and display a sharp strike with perfectly centered obverse and reverse motifs, surrounded by high, deeply denticled rims. A few light abrasions beneath Liberty's chin are the only notable marks on the otherwise smooth, attractive fields and devices. The strike is bold and complete. Few examples of the variety exist any finer, with this MS62 coin near the lower end of the Condition Census for the die pair. Population: 7 in 62, 5 finer (9/14).
