Description

(1834-1837) Bechtler Five Dollar, AU50
K-17, Plain Edge, 'RUTHERFORD.'

(1834-1837) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, RUTHERFORD, Plain Edge, 140 G, 20 C, AU50 PCGS. K-17, R.5. A scarce Territorial gold piece (as are all of the Bechtler issues), the Kagin-17 variety is by far the most frequently seen die marriage among the other 140 G, 20 C Bechtler five dollar gold pieces. All Kagin Fourth Series varieties have a plain edge, except the rare K-16 variety, which has a reeded edge and no period after "RUTHERFORD"; almost equally rare, the K-18 shows RUTHERF: in its abbreviated format. The K-19 die pair is notably scarce, with 20 distant from CARATS and regular A's in CAROLINA.

This K-17 example was struck from misaligned dies. The upper right portion of the obverse and the lower right area on the reverse are weakly impressed, while the remainder of the coin is strong. Rich russet and orange accents surround the raised areas of this attractive, original green-gold Bechtler five dollar gold coin. Traces of luster remain among the devices, and the reverse is rotated 45° clockwise in relation to the obverse. Natural eye appeal abounds. Population: 11 in 50, 31 finer (3/19).
