Description

1803 BD-5 Eagle, AU50
Old-Time Eye Appeal
Star on Cloud Reverse

1803 $10 Large Reverse Stars, Star on Cloud, BD-5, High R.4, AU50 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State g/b. An outstanding AU example of this less often seen variety, showing thick old-time patina in shades of copper-gold, orange, and lavender. The strike is even, and wear is minimal. The surfaces are smooth and problem-free.

No ten dollar gold pieces were struck in 1802, but six varieties of 1803 eagles are known. BD-5 is the second most often seen, but it is noticeably scarcer than BD-3. Fewer than 110 examples are believed extant in all grades. This variety is distinctive for a small star that is punched into the upper-right corner of the last cloud on the reverse. It is worn weak on this example but remains discernible. Due to the scarcity and demand of 1804-dated coins, this 1803 eagle is an ideal late-series type coin. The old-time look will appeal to range of collectors.
