Description
1848 'CAL.' Quarter Eagle, Unc Details
First U.S. Commemorative
1848 $2 1/2 CAL. -- Repaired -- NGC Details. Unc. The 1848
"CAL." Liberty quarter eagle was struck from the first deposit of
California gold to reach the Philadelphia Mint in 1848. Only 1,389
quarter eagles were struck with the incuse letters stamped into the
reverse to commemorate the historic events taking place in the Far
West at that time. Many numismatists consider this issue the first
United States commemorative coin. This well-detailed example shows no signs of actual wear, but some evidence of repair shows on the devices and lower reverse field. The light orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster and the overall presentation remains quite attractive.(Registry values: P2)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25HA, PCGS# 7749, Greysheet# 8270)
