Description
1652 Pine Tree Shilling, VF20
Small Planchet
Noe-30, Salmon 12-G
1652 Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, Noe-30, W-935, Salmon
12-G, R.3, VF20 PCGS. 66.05 grains. There are four frequently
encountered Small Planchet Pine Tree shilling varieties: Salmon 2-B
is rated R.2, while Salmon 3-B, 11-F, and 12-G are each rated R.3.
Those four varieties, including the present 12-G example, are the
best choices for colonial type collectors. The Large 6 and long
tail on 2 are keys to identifying the variety. Although peripheral
weakness is noted on both sides and the reverse is improperly
centered, this is an attractive midgrade example of the early
Massachusetts silver coinage. The antique gray surfaces of this
piece lighten to silver-gray on the raised elements. Listed on page
36 of the 2025 Guide Book. From The Charles R. Meeker II Collection.
