1865-S $20 AU55 NGC. Small S. The 1865-S Liberty double eagle claims a large mintage of more than a million pieces. Because the coins were intended for use in foreign trade or for currency reserves in Eastern banks, many high-grade examples were lost in shipwrecks and have been recovered in recent years. This attractive Choice AU specimen retains most of its original design detail and the rose-gold surfaces show only minor abrasions.(Registry values: N1793)
