Description
1857-O Double Eagle, AU58
Rare Any Finer
1857-O $20 AU58 NGC. NGC and PCGS have certified fewer than
225 1857-O double eagles in all grades, a mere five pieces of which
are designated Mint State, none finer than MS63. Near-Mint State,
the grade of the present example, is therefore likely to be the
finest to be encountered by most collectors. NGC has seen 26 pieces
in AU58, a number which we feel is inflated by resubmissions.Yellow-gold surfaces display considerable luster and exhibit well-struck design elements. Additionally, while scattered marks are noted, they are not as severe as typically seen on this issue. A rather pleasing specimen overall. Census: 26 in 58 (2 in 58+), 4 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N2998)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2694, PCGS# 8921, Greysheet# 9883)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
