Description
1910-S Half Eagle, Frosty MS65
Condition Census Rarity
Few Ever Offered in This Lofty Grade
1910-S $5 MS65 PCGS Secure. Despite an unsuspecting mintage
of more than 770,000 pieces, the 1910-S Indian half eagle is among
the scarcer issues in the series in Mint State, and the typical
Uncirculated coin grades no finer than MS62. In MS63 or better
grades, the 1910-S five is a rarity, and in Gem or finer condition,
only eight pieces are reportedly certified with room in that figure
for one or two resubmissions. Our Permanent Auction Archives show
only five previous appearances of a Gem-graded example and none
finer. The last MS65 PCGS coin that we handled was more than a
decade ago in our San Francisco ANA Signature sale (Heritage,
7/2005), lot 10367, where it realized $49,450. More recently, an
MS65+ PCGS CAC coin, offered by Goldberg's (6/2016), lot 1593,
realized more than $123,000. There have been no other Gem examples
sold at auction in the last decade and a half. This is an issue for which demand far surpasses the supply of Gem-quality survivors. The present coin is a landmark offering and an important Registry Set acquisition. Both the current (Simpson) and the all-time finest (Jim O'Neal) PCGS Registry Sets lack or lacked this issue in Gem condition. This does not speak to an inability to afford a piece in this grade but rather an inability to find an example for sale. Only the Duckor and Price collections are listed in the all-time finest top five as having contained Condition Census 1910-S half eagles.
This PCGS Secure Gem offers the active Registry Set assembler the chance to mark his or her place in numismatic history by acquiring one of the premier condition rarities in the series and advancing toward the goal of completing a date and mintmark set that ranks as the finest of all time. This coin's sharp strike, frosty rose-gold luster, and impressively clean fields combine to deliver eye appeal worthy of only the finest collection. This is a coin that just begs to be admired over and over again, both for its rarity and it aesthetic appeal. Population: 6 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (9/16).(Registry values: N7079)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28DM, PCGS# 8519, Greysheet# 9323)
Weight: 8.36 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
