Description

1872 Shield Nickel, MS67
Condition Census Registry Coin

1872 5C MS67 PCGS. Little has been written about the collectibility of Shield nickels, and as a result, the series is likely one of the most under-pursued collections in American numismatics. Only 38 PCGS Basic Registry Sets are listed for this series, despite a need for only 17 coins to complete the collection, and of these most are incomplete. One of the dates missing from most sets in top condition is the 1872, which has an MS67 population of only four coins at PCGS (11/16). One of the top-grade examples is housed in the current and all-time finest PCGS Registry Set. Another is offered here. This piece displays a razor-sharp strike and satiny silver luster with a hint of light champagne toning. There are no distracting abrasions. The obverse periphery exhibits several prominent die cracks, as is typical of the type in general. Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (11/16).(Registry values: N4719)
