1865-S Double Eagle, AU55
Original Luster Remains

1865-S $20 AU55 NGC. This is a well-detailed, thoroughly lustrous Choice AU example that shows original orange-gold and peach surfaces. Scattered abrasions are not unusual for the grade. The 1865-S double eagle was rare in high grade prior to the salvage of the S.S. Brother Jonathan and S.S. Republic shipwrecks, which together produced about 750 examples. Today, the issue is a popular Civil War-era type coin.(Registry values: N1793)
