1842 $5 Large Letters -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. The narrow gap between FIVE and D confirms the rare Large Letters variety. But any 1842 half eagle is elusive, given the low mintage of 27,578 pieces. The present green-gold example is richly detailed but somewhat cloudy from a cleaning. Relevant marks are few, confined to the nose and near stars 5 and 11.(Registry values: P7)
