1855 Flying Eagle Cent in Bronze
Judd-173, PR65 Brown

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-173, Pollock-198, Low R.7, PR65 Brown PCGS. CAC. 94.75 grains. 93% copper, 5.6% tin, 1.0% zinc. The Flying Eagle cent pattern in large format, featuring a hooked-neck eagle on the obverse and ONE CENT in the center of the reverse surrounded by a small laurel wreath. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. To date we have seen three different compositions of this pattern. It seems unlikely that the tin and zinc alloy would allow the original red to remain on the copper, and that is the conclusion of USPatterns.com: "rare showing any red color." Nevertheless, this is an attractive piece with deep brown and blue color. The fields are nicely mirrored on each side. What appear to be heavy roller marks are seen on the lower-right portion of the wreath.
