Description

1862-S Quarter Eagle, MS61
Mintage 8,000 Pieces

1862-S $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Even as gold coinage production skidded to severe lows at Philadelphia during the Civil War years, output at San Francisco was business-as-usual, which is to say high with double eagles and paltry for every other denomination. The quarter eagle, at 8,000 pieces struck, is no exception. The issue is scarce regardless of grade and a distinct rarity in Mint State. This MS61 example has lustrous yellow-orange surfaces overall with scattered green-gold accents through fields with cartwheel luster. The devices are well-defined and though each side has a number of wispy abrasions, there are surprisingly few faults of individual significance. Census: 2 in 61, 0 finer (11/13).
