Description

1879-CC GSA Dollar, MS65+
Among Finest Certified

1879-CC $1 GSA MS65+ NGC. VAM-4. Ex: Toneddollars Collection. A die chip between the left-side loops of the 8 in the date is the most obvious identifier for VAM-4. Additionally, a die line descends into the field from the base of Liberty's nose, and the right C in the mintmark is doubled on the upper left inside. The 1879-CC has a higher mintage than the 1880-CC, 1881-CC and 1885-CC, but is nonetheless much rarer than those later Carson City issues, particularly in better Mint State grades. The reason is that much of the 1880-CC through 1885-CC production was never released into circulation, and was eventually dispersed in the GSA auctions of the 1970s, while the 1879-CC primarily entered into Old West commerce. The 1879-CC is collectible in a GSA holder, but patience is required relative to the plentiful appearances of the 1880-CC through 1885-CC, and most such pieces are in MS61 to MS64 grades. Gem GSA 1879-CC dollars are formidable rarities, since high-grade pieces were typically broken out of their GSA encasement for submission to the grading services during the late 1980s and most of the 1990s. NGC and PCGS did not certify silver dollars in GSA holders until the 21st century.

The present Gem shows a hint of golden toning on the portrait, but the lustrous and smooth surfaces are close to brilliant overall. The strike is good, with definition on the hair above the ear and Liberty's ear. Contact of any notice is limited to the field between the wreath and the left (facing) wing. Delicate grazes are also near the M in UNUM, and the E in E PLURIBUS. A GSA box is included. Census: 15 in 65 (5 in 65+), 0 finer (8/24).
