Description

1889-CC Double Eagle, MS62
Rarely Found Finer

1889-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1-A. After a brief hiatus that began in 1886, the Carson City Mint began regular coinage again in late 1889. Double eagle production in that year, however, amounted to only a little more than 30,000 coins (far fewer than were struck of the more popular Morgan dollar of this same year), and most of these experienced extensive circulation. Mint State survivors are scarce in all grades, but become extremely rare above the MS62 level. The surfaces on this MS62 piece show the scuffiness one would expect from a coin of this grade, but with full mint frost over each side. The design elements are well-defined and the surfaces display lovely green-gold luster. Population: 56 in 62, 7 finer (3/15).
