An important offering of
Tokens and Medals in Long Beach |
|
It is our pleasure to present a large and important gathering of
tokens and medals from two dozen consignors in our June 10 & 12 Long Beach Expo Tokens &
Medals Signature Auction, led by more than 600 lots from the
incomparable Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society and
another 400+ lots from The Rev. Dr. James Gore King McClure
Collection. A Signature Floor Session on Friday, June 10 at 10:00
a.m. (PT) will offer live floor bidding, while a Signature®
Internet Session on Monday, June 13 will complete the offering.
The Selections From the
Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society represent Mr.
Newman's special interest in Missouri tokens and other exonumia,
but the breadth of surprising and intriguing pieces touches many
specialties including Civil War tokens, Civil War patriotics, Civil
War merchant tokens, Hard Times tokens, U.S. Trade tokens, Betts
medals, Early American tokens, U.S. Mint medals, Expositions and
Fairs items, So-Called dollars, Washingtonia, and miscellaneous
pieces - all collected many decades ago. Multiple Mint State
examples are included of many issues, with off-metal and silver
representatives as well. Several new die combinations and varieties
have surfaced from the collection.
One of the multiple surprises found in the Rev. Dr. James Gore
King McClure Collection was the astounding attention to detail
in the tokens and medals segment of the collection. There is
literally something for every exonumia collector, most in high
grades. Clearly, Dr. McClure was fascinated with tokens and medals
and while it may be inaccurate to say all are rare, most are
conditionally so with the typical grades ranging from MS64 to
MS67.
The consignor of The Twin Cities
Collection of Medals purchased this memorable collection of
medals intact several years ago, although the collection itself was
put together over a 30+ year span. Primarily U.S. Mint medals,
Washingtonia and other areas of medallic interest are included. In
all, the collection includes 129 medals, most encapsulated in
oversized NGC holders.
We call special attention to the Signature® Internet Session, to be
held on Monday, June 13, since many of the token and medal lots
will be part of this fast-paced online session. The Cosmique
Collection will make up a large contingent of So-Called dollars
in the auction, with 130 HK varieties - each carefully assembled
with attention to high quality and eye appeal. Many are Gem quality
in Prooflike or Deep Prooflike format.
Just a few of the individual highlights in this auction include:
- Rare and important 1781 Capture of St.
Eustatia, Betts-581, AU58 NGC. Silver
- Impressive 1783 Treaty of
Versailles, Betts-612, Silver, AU58 NGC
- America's First Medal, "1776" Washington
Before Boston Medal, Baker-47B, Betts-542, Julian MI-1b, MS62 Brown
PCGS
- Three inch diameter 1976 National
Bicentennial Medal, Swo-521Aa, MS63 NGC, 538.64 grams .900 fine
gold
- Famous 1838 Am I Not a Man
and a Brother Hard Times Token, Low-54A, HT-82, High R.7, XF40
NGC, four known
- 1863 White and Swann,
Huntsville, AL token, Fuld 425A-12d, R.10, MS64 NGC, only three
known in copper-nickel
- 1863 A. Cohen,
Leavenworth, KS token, Fuld 550A-1a, R.6, MS63 Red and Brown
NGC, one of the finest of about two dozen known in copper
- 1863 A. Cohen,
Leavenworth, KS token, Fuld 550A-1b, R.8, MS61 NGC, rare brass
example with less than ten thought to exist
- Undated Union Forever
Civil War Token, Fuld-241A/417Aa, R.10, MS64 Brown NGC, clearly
the finest of four known examples of the die pair
- 1858 Capt. William L.
Herndon MS63 Brown NGC, purportedly presented to Herndon's
widow by the state of Virginia
It has been many years since we last had a tokens and medals
auction at Long Beach. Such a large offering is truly unusual, and
the fact that the majority of pieces come from old-time collections
and have never changed hands by public auction or any other means
makes this a dream come true for token and medals enthusiasts. This
auction is open for bidding now at www.HA.com/coins!

Seldom Seen Selections:
1838 Am I Not a Man and a Brother Hard Times Token |
|
We are proud to offer an example of the famous "Am I Not a Man and a
Brother" Hard Times token, graded XF40 by NGC as a part of our
June 10 & 12 Long Beach Expo
Tokens & Medals Signature Auction, Just four examples of this
token are known. The other three specimens are the John J. Ford,
Jr. example also in a major private collection, the Don Miller
piece that is now in an advanced Long Island Collection, and the
granular example that was recently discovered in Canada.
The John Ford example in the June 2004 offering of his Hard Times
tokens was graded Extremely Fine and it realized $71,875 at that
time. The Ford and Newman coins are virtually identical. We are
unaware of the grade of the Don Miller example. Graded Fine Details
with environmental damage, the Canada discovery piece was offered
in the September 2011 Stack's-Bowers sale where it realized
$37,950.
These tokens are patterned after late 18th century British Conder
tokens. A similar token, Low-54, has a kneeling female figure and
the inscription "Am I Not a Woman and a Sister"; those tokens are
relatively plentiful. The Low-54A rarity is thought to be a pattern
issue.
This attractive olive and chestnut-brown piece has exceptional
surfaces with trivial rim bumps visible only under magnification.
This important rarity, destined for a specialist's cabinet,
represents an extremely important opportunity as many years can
pass between appearances.

Website Tips: The new search bar |
|
You may have noticed a change to the search bar that appears on the
home page and the search results page. No longer are any of the
initial search selections hidden; everything is immediately
available.
The "Enter keyword or Lot Number" box is where you enter your
search term, such as "1909-S" or "Vegas" or "Elway" or "Picasso".
You can search for lot numbers here, as well.
Click on "All Categories" or "All [Name of category]" to narrow
your search by type of items. If you are on the full Heritage
website, you will be able to narrow your search by categories such
as Art, Coins, Sports, etc. If you are on one of the more
specialized sites, choose the type of item you want to look for. In
coins, you would search by coin type or country.
The next selection allows you to search through all items, all
auctions, a single auction, or all items available for immediate
sale (not available in the auction archives for obvious reasons).
On the home page and on searches for available lots, this selection
is entitled "Select Auctions or Buy Now". In the archives, this is
entitled "All Sold Auction Items".
The last selection allows you to search through different kind of
data for each lot or available item. Titles will look through that
information visible in the search results. Titles and Descriptions
searches through the same information as Titles, but will also look
through the description of the lot. Titles and Descriptions is less
restrictive than Titles, but may give more information you are not
looking for. Lot number limits the search to lot number only. In
coins, there are three other selections: US Coin Year (returns US
coins only), Index number (searches through the PCGS index number
for the specific item), and Cert. ID/Serial #, which will look for
a very specific item by the certification ID on the slab. In most
of our collectible types, the default search is Titles and
Descriptions. You can change your personal default search type to
Titles or back by performing any search with a keyword. You cannot
change your default to any of the other choices.

Prince's Iconic Yellow Cloud Guitar
Offered at Heritage Auctions
Prince's personally-owned and played Yellow Cloud Electric
Guitar — an instrument as unique and innovative as the artist's
legendary contribution to the music world — will be offered
exclusively in Heritage Auctions' Entertainment & Music
Memorabilia Auction June 24-25, 2016 in Beverly Hills. The
guitar appears at auction with an opening bid of $30,000.
The solid body guitar, made-to-order in the shape and style he made
famous, was the superstar's instrument of choice for his hours-long
concerts performed from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. The pop
star died April 21, 2016 at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota.
"It's interesting to realize that Prince personally designed and
commissioned this piece of art and it carries hallmarks of his
famous "Love Symbol", which he would adopt as his name during a
famous contract dispute with Warner Bros. in the early 1990s," said
Garry Shrum, Director of Music Memorabilia at Heritage Auctions.
"One glimpse and you have no doubt that this is Prince's
guitar."
The singular guitar was built to Prince's exacting standards and
expectations: Presented in bright-yellow with gold-tone hardware,
the instrument is complete with Schaller tuners, a Floyd Rose
Original tremolo (with bar), one volume knob, one tone knob, a
three-way switch, nut, and truss rod cover. The pickups are both
from EMG -- the bridge pickup is a humbucker and the neck pickup is
a single coil. On the back of the body is the original label:
"Property of PRN MUSIC CORP. PM 16644". The custom hard case has an
identical tag with the serial number of 16643.
"Prince was rarely photographed without an electric guitar strapped
to his body," Shrum said. "As celebrity stage-used instruments go,
this piece is as unique as Beethoven's piano or John Coltrane's
saxophone."
Prince favored this guitar for recording sessions and at
performances for several years until the neck broke in France. The
artist turned to his guitar technician, Zeke Clark, to repair the
guitar rather than replace it.
"This Yellow Cloud guitar was Prince's main guitar and used in most
of his early videos and touring performances & album recordings,"
according to Clark's letter of authenticity, which accompanies the
guitar. "In 1994 he broke the neck of this guitar at a French T.V.
show. After returning to [United States], I repaired neck and
installed the first Floyd Rose set up Prince ever played ... [a]nd
then used in recording more albums, up until the symbol guitar was
born."
The auction will also include a rare, Reel-to-Reel Demo Tape
with Tracklist Written in His Own Hand (opening bid: $2,000).
The early Prince demo tape, made between 1976 or 1977, was recorded
before he was signed to contract. The tape - in a box with the
tracklist and Prince's name written in black felt-pen by his own
hand - contains three songs. The first two, "Just as Long as We're
Together" and "My Love Is Forever," would go on to be re-recorded
for his debut album, For You, while the third is an instrumental
track titled "Jelly Jam" which was later reworked into part of
"Just as Long..."
Additional memorabilia appearing in the auction recognizing Prince
and his extraordinary music career include a 1984 "Purple Rain" RIAA
Platinum Record Sales Award bestowed to Prince and the
Revolution commemorating the sale of more than 1 million copies
(opening bid: $1,000);an RIAA Gold Record Sales
Award for "1999", his first to reach the Top Ten (opening bid:
$1,000); an RIAA Hologram Gold Video
Sales Award for "Purple Rain", the artist's first home video
release (opening bid: $750).
Heritage Auctions' Entertainment Signature
Auction takes place June 24-25, 2016. Prince's Personally-Owned
Yellow Cloud Guitar will be on public display June 22-25, 2016 at
Heritage Auctions' Beverly Hills office, 9478 West Olympic Blvd.,
1st Floor, Beverly Hills, CA 90212.

Important and rare Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona Cosmograph
wristwatch expected to top $100,000 in Heritage New York Timepieces
auction
A very rare Rolex Ref. 6239 "Paul
Newman" Cosmograph Daytona wristwatch, one of Rolex's most
famous and desirable timepieces - nicknamed for the late, famed
actor for the dial on the watch that he wore in several films - is
the principle enticement to collectors in Heritage Auctions May 26,
2016 Watches & Fine Timepieces
Signature® Auction being held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. It
is estimated at $100,000+.
"This beautiful timepiece, with its dial variation, art deco look,
different color pattern and subsidiary dials featuring little
squares instead of numerals is a classic of horology," said Jim
Wolf, Director of Fine Timepieces at Heritage Auctions. "It's also
the ultimate vintage Rolex for the serious connoisseur."
Collectors will also note with great interest the inclusion of a
stunning Patek Philippe Very Fine
18k Yellow Gold Ref. 3970E Chronograph with Register, Perpetual
Calendar, Moon Phases and 24-Hour Indication in the auction,
estimated at $90,000+, along with two exceptional and complicated
A. Lange & Sohne wristwatches, the first a Langematik 18K Yellow Gold
Perpetual Calendar Wristwatch, Ref. 310.021, estimated at
$50,000+ and a circa 1872 Quality 1A Gold
Quarter Repeater With Date, Certificate & Ledger Entry, with
the distinction of being the oldest still existing Repeater watch
manufactured by Lange. It is estimated at $40,000+.
"It's no small distinction that this is the oldest surviving Lange
repeating watch," said Wolf. "This is a museum piece and an
exceptional masterpiece."
A rare and very fine Gold
Pocket Chronometer, with its original box and papers, no. 26, from
the celebrated watchmaker Albert H. Potter & Co., presents
likely the only example of a highly finished detent chronometer
made by Potter that is complete with box, instruction card and
certificate signed by this celebrated watchmaker. It carries a
pre-auction estimate of $55,000+.
Another important timepiece in the auction is the personal watch of J.M.
Studebaker, the last of the five famed automaker brothers to pass
away, in 1917. The watch, an Ad. Lang & Cie Geneve fine gold and
enamel Keyless Lever pocket watch, circa 1870s. The watch,
estimated at $10,000+, is a museum quality piece with a signature
dial, engraved portrait and enameled buggy and wagon, hearkening
back to the original family business of making horse-drawn
vehicles.
