Exquisite 1827 Dime to be Offered at Auction!

Dallas, Texas: "Although this exceptional 1827 dime is graded MS65 Prooflike by NGC, it should perhaps more properly be described as PR65," said Greg Rohan, President of Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries. "This is apparently a proof-only variety with 11 examples currently known, ranging in grade from Good to PR67. An in-depth article about this variety was written by Mike Sherrill and published in issue 41 of the John Reich Journal."

"The most recent auction record for a comparable example is the Starr-Logan coin, PR62, which sold for $17,250 in November 2002," said Rohan. "The record price is $85,000 for the PR67 Lovejoy coin in 1990."

"This was one of only a small number of individual die varieties not included in our recent offering of the Jules Reiver Collection," Rohan added. "All known examples, especially those in high enough grade to see the details, have the same general characteristics: the stars on the obverse are partially or completely lacking their central details and the hair curls are not crisply struck. On the reverse, the eagle's claws are somewhat weakly defined, and the vertical shield stripes are merged. All other design elements are bold and crisp. Both sides have fully mirrored fields with crisp transition to the devices. Always seen with a die crack from the left upright of F to the scroll, S in PLURIBUS, the eagle's head and beak, and on to the top of the wing below. Both dies were initially used to produce non-proof 1827 dimes, then mated to produce this proof-only variety. This explains some of the characteristics of this variety that are usually associated with business strikes. This lovely example has gorgeous original rainbow toning on both sides with only a few tiny contact marks visible under magnification. A few faint hairlines can be seen at the lower reverse. The overall aesthetic appeal is exceptionally high, and will make this coin one of the highlights of our upcoming auction."

Heritage Auction Galleries will offer the 1827 10C MS65 Prooflike NGC in their upcoming Signature Auction, to be held May 31-June 3, 2006 as the official auctioneer of the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectible Expo, at the Long Beach Convention Center, 100 South Pine Avenue, Long Beach, CA, 90802.
