Flying Eagle and Indian Cents Anchor Heritage’s June Long Beach Auction

Dallas, TX -- Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. will be conducting the official auction of the June 2002 Long Beach Coin Expo. The four-session Signature Sale will take place June 6-8 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

“We are offering three fabulous collections of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents at our upcoming June Long Beach Signature Sale,” stated Bob Korver, Heritage’s Director of Auctions. “The Marvin Elkin Collection, which is listed on the PCGS Registry as the Jon/Lor Collection, includes an 1856 Flying Eagle Cent graded MS65 by PCGS, a full Red Gem 1867 Cent, and an MS65 PCGS representative of the key date 1877. After the Elkin Collection sells, we will be auctioning the Alex Highland Collection of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents. Among the more important coins in this collection are a pair of MS65 NGC 1858/7 Flying Eagle Cents, one of which is a rare early die state (http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?292067100). The fabled 1873 Doubled LIBERTY Cent is also represented by two coins, one of which grades MS64 Red and Brown NGC, and the other of which is certified MS65 Red and Brown NGC (http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?292067060). All of the early proofs in the Flying Eagle and Indian series are included in the Highland Collection, among which is an unquestionably rare 1864 L on Ribbon Indian Cent certified PR64 Red by PCGS (http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?292067001). According to Heritage Chief Cataloger Mark Van Winkle, this coin is the finest proof 1864 L on Ribbon Cent known, and it is also the only known representative of this die pair. Finally, the Collection of Dr. Gary Lattimer will entice bidders with Gem 1857 and 1858 Flying Eagle Cents, an 1856 Flying Eagle Cent in PR64 PCGS, an MS67 PCGS 1862 Indian Cent, and PR65-66 PCGS representatives of the proof 1859, 1860, 1862, 1863, and 1864 Copper-Nickel issues.”

According to Heritage Executive VP Greg Rohan, “We are also offering the Jon/Lor PCGS Registry Sets of Buffalo Nickels, Walking Liberty Half Dollars, and Peace Dollars in our June Long Beach Signature Sale. Highlights from the previous collection include a 1916 Doubled Die Obverse graded AU55 by PCGS, a similarly graded 1918/7-D, and an MS65 PCGS example of the always-popular 1937-D Three-Legged Nickel. The Jon/Lor Walkers include a 1921 in MS65 PCGS, a 1921-D graded MS64 by the same service, and an MS64 1921-S, also certified by PCGS. And the key date 1934-S Peace Dollar is represented by an MS64 PCGS example in the Jon/Lor Registry Set.”

Online bids for coins in the June 2002 Signature Sale are being accepted at the Heritage website, www.HeritageCoin.com. Full color, enlargeable images of virtually every coin in the sale are also posted at the same web address.
