Chet Krause Collection of Canadian Coinage Anchors Heritage’s January 2004 NYINC Auction

Dallas, TX: Heritage World Coin Auctions’ January 12, 2004 Signature Sale at the New York International Numismatic Convention will be anchored by Chet Krause’s world-famous collection of Canadian and Maritime Provinces coins. Heritage is an Official Auctioneer of the NYINC.

“Chet Krause,” explained HWCA Director Warren Tucker, “is a legend in the world coin collecting community. The founder of Krause Publications, his publishing empire started in Iola, Wisconsin with Numismatic News in 1952, and soon grew to encompass diverse hobby/collectible books and periodicals. He also co-authored the Standard Catalog of World Coins, an irreplaceable reference that totally changed the nature of collecting world coins.”

Chet Krause’s Collection of Canadian Coinage contains dozens of Choice to Gem Uncirculated pieces, many originating from the famous collection of John Jay Pittman, Jr. “The highlight of the Krause Collection,” continued Tucker, “is his Mint Red example of the exceedingly rare 1936 Dot Cent; with only three pieces extant (and none in the Bank of Canada Collection), this is the undisputed North American Small Cent rarity. At the 2003 NYINC, Heritage was proud to have sold the Belzberg example of this incredible rarity for $230,000, a new price record for any North American Small Cent.” The Krause example was purchased by Pittman in the 1961 CNA sale, and was originally the property of Maurice LaFortune, a former employee of the Royal Canadian Mint; this is the famous coin stolen from Pittman in 1964, only to be mysteriously returned in an envelope by the thieves.
