Bob Korver Elected Fellow of American Numismatic Society
Dallas, Texas: Robert B. Korver of Carrollton, Texas was elected as a Fellow of the American Numismatic Society at the ANS Council’s October 2003 annual meeting. More than 2,000 ANS members enjoy access to their world-class numismatic collection (containing more than one million coins, notes, and related objects), and library (containing more than 100,000 items).“The ANS is one of the finest numismatic research institutions in the world, so this is a great honor,” said Mr. Korver. “I look forward to being able to serve this fine organization and the numismatic community. I have been impressed with the ANS’ research facilities for more than three decades, since I first became a member in 1973. While the ANA may be better known to casual collectors due to its focus on the hobby of coin collecting, the ANS is absolutely a world-class institution for numismatic research worthy of membership and support by every serious numismatist.”
The ANS was organized in 1858 in New York, and since 1908 was located at Broadway and 155th Street in New York. The ANS is currently moving to its new Wall Street location at 140 William Street. While its new building was being prepared, the ANS has exhibited rare coins at its new neighbor, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at 33 Liberty Street. ANS membership consists of numismatic scholars, serious collectors, and academics. The Society’s Graduate Seminar in Numismatics, conducted each summer, is the world’s leading academic training program in numismatics. The ANS publishes the American Journal of Numismatics, Numismatic Literature, Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum (publishing the Society's Ancient Greek collection), and Ancient Coins in North American Collections (publishing notable private and public collections).
This is the second honor that Bob Korver has received recently. In August, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on a State Department oversight committee, implementing the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Property to restrict pillaging and smuggling of significant archaeological or ethnological artifacts.
Bob has been an auctioneer and professional numismatist for more than three decades. He was a Museum Specialist with the National Numismatic Collections at the Smithsonian Institution, and serves as a consultant to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing. He was the Auction Director of Bowers & Ruddy Galleries (1975-1980) and is Director Emeritus of Heritage Numismatic Auctions (1996-2003). He has also provided expert services to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Franklin Mint. As the chief editorial writer for the Coin Dealer Newsletter, Bob wrote hundreds of articles and thousands of editorials explaining the marketplace for collectibles. His award-winning editorials and articles have appeared in dozens of publications, and he has been quoted in the national press by the New York Times and USA Today. His interviews have been broadcast on dozens of national and international radio and TV stations.
"All of us in the Heritage family," added Heritage Galleries Co-Chairman Jim Halperin, "congratulate Bob on this latest honor. Heritage Galleries is an advertising sponsor of the ANS Journal, and many employees are members. Bob's broad-based auction experiences and educational background will support strong contributions to the work of the ANS."
Bob earned degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta. His graduate education continued at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He serves the University of Colorado on the Advisory Board of the Department of History, as the alumni representative to the Campus Ethics Committee (overseeing the University’s student-run Honor Code), and through the National Alumni Admissions Assistance Program.
Added Heritage Galleries Co-Chairman Steve Ivy: "With Basic Associate membership only $40, we at Heritage think this is a bargain that every numismatist should take advantage of!”
