Heritage to auction the fabulous North Shore Collection in January FUN Signature Sale
Dallas, Texas: The North Shore Collection, among the most important consignments in the history of Heritage Numismatic Auctions, will be offered at the inaugural Platinum Night session (January 7) as part of the 2004 Florida United Numismatists Signature Sale to be held in Orlando, Florida between January 7 and 10. Platinum Night will be a special session containing many of the most valuable coins to be auctioned among the 17,000+ lots being sold by Heritage in Orlando.“The Double Eagles in the North Shore Collection are nearly complete by date and mintmark,” stated Heritage President Greg Rohan. “Only the 1856-O, the 1927-D, and the 1933 are absent. The collection includes PR64 to PR66 examples of the three proof-only dates, the 1883, 1884, and 1887. A High Relief certified as PR67 and an AU58 1861-S Paquet Reverse are also included. The ultra-rare 1854-O is graded AU58 by NGC and is tied for the finest known. The legendary 1870-CC is graded AU53 by PCGS and is the single highest certified by that service.”
· 1883 $20 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148022
This spectacular Deep Cameo Gem Proof 1883 Double Eagle is more than just an important major Double Eagle rarity - it is also an American art treasure. Graded PR65 Deep Cameo by PCGS is assurance of its quality. On average, only one 1883 proof double eagle appears at public auction each year. This issue is widely recognized as the first of three very rare, proof-only (no business strikes) double eagles issued produced during the 1880s. It is the second rarest Liberty Head double eagle (not including the 1861 Paquet reverse), in terms of the total number that exist in all grades. Of the 92 struck, perhaps 40 or so were never released and later melted, and an estimated 15 to 20 pieces survive to this time. This piece is near the top of the Condition Census, being tied for second finest certified among Deep Cameo examples.
· 1884 $20 PR66 Cameo NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148003
The North Shore Collection contains the finest known example of this rarity, the 1884 Double Eagle, surviving as a beautiful PR66 Cameo NGC example. Of the three Proof-only $20 issues of the 1880s, this is most likely the rarest date - even rarer than the 1883. Only 71 examples were struck, and the survival rate is somewhat lower than for other proof Twenties of this era, with perhaps only 12 to 15 pieces surviving. This is the finest 1884 double eagle certified by NGC or PCGS, including all non-cameo, Cameo, or Deep Cameo pieces.
· 1887 $20 PR64 Cameo NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148024
The 1887 Double Eagle is the third rare, Proof-Only issue from the 1880s, and only when compared against the 1883 and 1884 examples can it be seen as less than prohibitively rare. Graded PR64 Cameo by NGC, the 1887 had an original mintage of only 121 pieces, with an unknown number of those melted. Today's estimates project 25 survivors, which still ranks among the "rarest of the rare" in the entire Double Eagle series. This near-Gem qualifies as a mid-Condition Census example of this very rare and highly respected proof-only date.
· 1907 $20 High Relief, PR67 NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148002e
This magnificent 1907 Superb Proof High Relief Double Eagle, certified by NGC as PR67, has claims to be America's most beautiful coin. After the striking of 24 Ultra High Reliefs in February and March 1907, Henry Hering (Augustus Saint-Gaudens' pupil and assistant) prepared a second set of master dies and hubs in lower relief. Two pair of the six pair of working dies made were used to also strike an unknown number of Satin Finish proofs. All High Reliefs were struck on the Mint's hydraulic presses, which were normally used to produce medals. Regular business strike High Reliefs required five blows from the hydraulic press to strike up, but to fully bring up the extra detail on proofs, each planchet was struck six or seven times. Somewhere between 20 and 25 proofs were estimated struck, and an unknown number survive today.
· 1861-S $20 Paquet Reverse AU58 NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148057
The North Shore Collection contains one of the finest known 1861-S Paquet Reverse Double Eagles, certified by NGC as AU58. This significant reverse variation was noted as early as 1865, as an 1861 Philadelphia Paquet Reverse double eagle was sold as lot 2818 in W.E. Woodward's Bache Collection where it realized $37, a significant sum in this era for an esoteric gold coin sold only four years after its issuance. Still the Paquet Reverse received very little in the way of publicity until the 1930s, but as a number of San Francisco Mint examples were later located in Europe, its fame grew. Today, it is clearly recognized as the rarest double eagle from the San Francisco mint, as no known survivors grade Uncirculated by today's interpretations.
· 1854-O $20 AU58 NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148089
This near-mint 1854-O Double Eagle, certified by NGC as an AU58, is tied for the finest known example. The issue is one of the two rarest and most famous $20s produced in the New Orleans mint, and only the 1856-O is as rare. This specimen is tied with the Dallas Bank Collection coin, which soared to $161,000 when it was sold in October 2001. An estimated 25-35 1854-O double eagles are known in all grades, with five to seven in About Uncirculated, and none have survived as Uncirculated.
· 1870-CC $20 AU53 PCGS;
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148001
The North Shore 1870-CC Double Eagle is the second finest known example, and is pedigreed to the famous Nevada Collection through Doug Winter, and a private collection via Universal Coin and Bullion; it is also the plate coin in the standard Winter/Cutler reference. This famous rarity had an original mintage of only 3,789 pieces, and over more than a century, attrition has taken a heavy toll. Doug Winter estimates that today only 35-45 1870-CC twenties are known in all grades, and three-quarters of the known survivors are no better than Fine-VF and are heavily bagmarked; from the standpoint of condition rarity, this the rarest date in the series. Two of the most illustrious collections of gold coins to be sold in the 20th century, those of Louis Eliasberg and Harry Bass, had XF40 and XF45 examples respectively.
"The Early Eagles are also amazing," added Heritage Co-Chairman Steve Ivy. "The fourteen piece set is complete by Guide Book variety and each coin is Uncirculated. Not content to simply collect by date, the consignor also included the very rare 1795 9 Leaves and 1798/7 7 by 6 Stars varieties."
· 1795 9 Leaves $10 MS60 PCGS, Taraszka-3
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148046
This exceptionally rare Mint State 1795 Nine Leaves Ten Dollar coin has been certified MS60 by PCGS. Among Eagle gold pieces, this is probably the rarest issue in the 138-year history of the denomination, with near-legendary status. As early as 1926 it brought a substantial premium over the more common 1795 13 Leaves. Designed by Robert Scot, some 116 pieces were struck on March 30, 1796, following an unknown (but presumably small) number struck on March 1, 1796 on Warrant No. 58 (which had a total mintage of 1,169 pieces) and on Warrant No. 66 of June 21, 1796. It is widely believed that today 10-13 specimens exist in all grades, although 16 pieces have been certified in all grades by NGC and PCGS (undoubtedly, there are multiple resubmissions included in the census numbers). This is a mid-Condition Census coin and appears to be tied for third or fourth finest known among the handful of high grade survivors. Its pedigree includes the Angus Black Collection (New Netherlands, 6/70), lot 483, where it realized $2,400; Auction '90 (Akers session, 8/90), lot 1916, where it brought $70,000; Michael Keston Collection (Superior, 1/96), lot 152.
· 1798/7 7x6 Stars $10 MS62 PCGS, Taraszka-10
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148005
The North Shore Collection includes a high grade (PCGS MS62) example of the rare 1798/7 Eagle with stars arranged 7x6, tied for the finest known survivor with the Lilly coin impounded in the Smithsonian Institution. The 7x6 star arrangement is the second rarest eagle in the entire series (second only to the 1795 Nine Leaves). Only 842 pieces were struck before the dies broke, and the most recent estimate of the number of survivors is a paltry 15, and this coin is #2 coin on Taraszka's roster. This coin was once owned by King Farouk, and when B. Max Mehl sold some of Farouk's holdings in 1948 he made the observation that, "It was sold to His Majesty as 'unique in this condition.' The fuller pedigree includes: Colonel E.H. Green; A Royal Sale / Farouk (B. Max Mehl, March 1948), lot 273, where it brought $1,050; Grant Pierce (Stack's, 5/65), lot 1436; J.W. Carter Collection (Stack's, 1/86), lot 179.
"The North Shore Collection also contains a complete set of Charlotte Mint Half Eagles, many of which are among the finest known. Rarities such as the 1840-C, 1842-C Small Date, 1844-C, and 1846-C are certified in Mint State. Nine other dates are certified as MS64 by either NGC or PCGS. The 2004 FUN Signature Sale will provide an uncommon opportunity for Southern branch mint gold specialists."

· 1846-C Half Eagle MS62 PCGS

Mr. Ivy continued, "Perhaps the single most spectacular coin in the sale is the 1848 CAL Quarter Eagle, which is graded MS67 by NGC. This historic variety commemorated the discovery of gold in California. Another important Quarter Eagle is the 1796 No Stars, graded MS62 by NGC. This was the first variety of the denomination struck, and is the only variety without obverse stars."
· 1848 CAL. Quarter Eagle MS67 NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148006
This exceptional 1848 CAL. Quarter Eagle, certified by NGC as MS67, is the second finest known example of this American rarity. Shortly after the discovery of gold in the American River region of California, the first shipment east of some 228 ounces of Gold Rush bullion, by Colonel R.B. Mason, California's military governor, was sent to Secretary of War William Learned Marcy. Marcy forwarded the gold ore to Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson at the Philadelphia Mint, where it was received on December 8 and was assayed at an average .894 fine. Marcy urged that, "As many may desire to procure specimens of coin made of the California gold, by exchanging other coin for it, I would suggest that it be made into quarter eagles with a distinguishing mark on each..." One distinguishing feature was added to each coin: the abbreviation CAL. was impressed into the reverse above the eagle. It is believed that enough gold bullion was left after the gold was extracted for some medals to strike 1,389 quarter eagles with the CAL. imprint. The CAL. quarter eagle is an absolute as well as a condition rarity also with only 50-60 pieces believed known today in all grades, the vast majority being no better than XF-AU.
· 1796 No Stars Quarter Eagle MS62 NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148028
MS62 NGC. The 1796 No Stars Quarter Eagle, one of 963 pieces minted, is a coin with many firsts. It is a well-known, one-year type coin that has a distinctive design unlike any subsequent quarter eagle, it is the first date of the $2.50 denomination (authorized by the Mint Act of April 2, 1792), it is the first issue to showcase a heraldic eagle on the reverse, and it is the first coin struck with sixteen reverse stars (honoring Tennessee's admission to the Union). The first dies were hastily prepared by Robert Scot with some assistance from John Smith Gardner. Possibly 80-100 pieces are extant today in all grades, but only half a dozen or so examples are believed known at the MS62 grade or higher, making this coin a legendary rarity in Condition Census quality.
Among other impressive rarities, the North Shore Collection contains a proof-only 1875 Three Dollar Princess, graded PR65 Cameo by NGC. The 1875 Eagle, notable for its low mintage of 120 pieces, is NGC-certified as PR64* Cameo."
· 1875 Three Dollar PR65 Cameo NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148007
This Cameo Gem 1875 Three Dollar is a stunning example of one of the most sought after of all U.S. gold coins, graded PR65 Cameo by NGC. The 1875 is a proof-only rarity, but the actual number produced is subject to some dispute. The official mintage was 20 pieces; however, somewhere around 31-33 pieces are actually believed known today, suggesting that an unknown (but small) number of coins were struck later than February 13. It appears that two different states of the dies were used to strike the proofs of this year; this coin most closely matches those considered to be originals. The pedigree includes Browning and the Dallas Bank Collection (Sotheby's/Stack's, 10/01), lot 345, where it realized $103,500.
· 1875 Eagle PR64* Cameo NGC
http://www.heritagecoin.com/hnaiphoto300.asp?336148129
This extremely rare 1875 PR64 Cameo Ten Dollar is one of only 7-8 proofs believed still extant. The 1875 is the undisputed key to the With Motto series of Liberty eagles, and is one of the rarest and most coveted of all U.S. coins; only 100 business strikes were produced and a paltry 20 proofs. Probably no more than 5-6 business strikes remain today in all grades, and a mere 7-8 proofs are believed extant, two of which are in museums. The provenance of this particular piece is uncertain. Harry Bass and John Pittman lacked this issue, and it is not the Trompeter coin, nor is it the piece from Auction '90, the Eliasberg coin, or the Byron Reed proof. Tracing this important coin's pedigree before the Sweet Collection will be a challenging and rewarding pursuit.
