Heritage Sells Complete Set of Ed Trompeter's Proof $5 Libs

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Rare Coin Galleries has announced the sale of the complete set of Proof Liberty Half Eagles 1858-1907, from the Ed Trompeter Estate, intact to a private collector. The Ed Trompeter Estate was purchased by Heritage in August for a world-record $15,177,500 from the Internal Revenue Service. Most of the coins had been off of the market for more than a decade. Following Heritage's announcement at the Portland ANA of the cash purchase of the entire Estate, several dealers privately approached Heritage to see if complete collections might be purchased intact. As a result one such contact, an anonymous dealer was able to purchase all 50 coins from the Liberty $5 series on behalf of his private customer.

The Trompeter Estate is being disbursed through several avenues, in addition to the private treaty sales. The 24 Matte Proofs ($5s, $10s, & $20s) from the 1908-1915 period were sold at the September 1998 Long Beach Signature Sale. Trompeter's With Motto Proof Eagles, 1866-1907, are being offered at the FUN Signature Sale, taking place in Orlando on January 6-8, 1999. Individual rarities will be periodically offered for sale through private treaty during 1999. The Trompeter Gold patterns, including the unique Amazonian Proof Pattern Set, have just been put on the market (additional information available from Greg Rohan, 1-800-872-6467 Ext. 300).
