Press Release - May 8, 2000

Numerous Treasures to Cross the Auction Block At June Long Beach

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. is pleased to announce its upcoming Long Beach Signature Sale. True to the firm's title as America's Convention Auctioneer?, Heritage's sale is the official auction of the Long Beach Coin Expo. The sale will be conducted June 8-10, 2000 in the Long Beach Convention Center.

The Dale Krueger Collection of Barber quarters offers near-Gem, Gem, and Superb Gem representatives of every issue in this popular series. Highlights include:

    1897-S MS 68 NGC
    1901-S MS 64 NGC
    1913-S MS 64 PCGS
The exquisite Piedmont Collection of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese coinage will anchor Heritage's world coin offerings at Long Beach. Noteworthy selections include:

    Korean gold 5, 10, and 20 won
    Korean 1892 five-piece proof set
Japanese early date Meiji coppers in BU
    Japanese Leprosarium coins
Chinese Sinkiang silver Sungarei pattern dragon dollar
Among the U.S. offerings in the Piedmont Collection is a discovery coin of great significance among early dollar specialists. "The coin in question, a 1796 dollar with Small Date, Large Letters (B-6, BB-64) in Die State III, arrived at Heritage as part of a consignment of well circulated coins," noted Heritage's Chief Cataloger Mark Van Winkle. "This coin is one of only two confirmed examples of this extremely rare die variety, the other specimen being in the collection of the well-known early dollar specialist Jules Reiver."

No less important for Asian coin specialists will be the DeLong Collection. Among the Chinese and Japanese rarities in this collection are:

Chinese Republic gold 10 yuan, 1919
Chinese Yuan Shi Kai dollar, year 9 (1920), struck in gold
Japanese Keicho gold Ichi Bu Kin (1 Bu-Ban-Kin), undated (1601-95)
Japanese Trade dollar, Meiji 8 (1875), Dragon/Value in wreath
As a result of the press surrounding the Piedmont Collection, an interesting chopmarked 1880-S half eagle was consigned to Heritage's June Long Beach Sale directly from China. "The importance of this coin is not the chopmark itself, but its presence on a U.S. half eagle," noted Warren Tucker, Heritage's World Coin Cataloger. "Chopmarks are seldom encountered on U.S. coins other than the Trade dollar. In fact, most of us at Heritage had never seen chopmarks on a U.S. gold coin. It was a thrill to examine this coin and speculate about its enigmatic history."

The collection of New York attorney Charles O. Blaisdell will also contribute significant U.S. rarities to this upcoming sale. The highlight coins include:

1877 Indian cent MS 63 Red and Brown
1933-S Walking Liberty half dollar MS 65 NGC
1863-S Liberty quarter eagle AU 50 NGC
1853-D Liberty half eagle AU 58 NGC
Assembled over more than two decades, the Willow Grove Collection will bring both rarity and originality to the Long Beach Sale. Highlights include:

1875-CC twenty cents MS 65 NGC
1806 Capped Bust Right half eagle, Round 6, 7x6 Stars MS 62 PCGS
1852-C Liberty half eagle AU 55 NGC
1854-S Liberty double eagle MS 63 NGC
A consignment from an East Coast Family includes, among other gold offerings, a 1933 Indian eagle that PCGS graded MS 65. According to Heritage's Executive Vice President Greg Rohan, "The 1933 eagle is a legendary rarity in the U.S. gold series. Of the 312,500 pieces originally produced, all but a handful was destroyed at the Mint. We believe that this important Gem, one of the 30-35 examples believed extant, will realize approximately $200,000."

The finest certified 1870-CC Liberty eagle will also cross the auction block in Long Beach as part of Heritage's Signature Sale. The coin, graded AU 55 by NGC, is making its triumphant return to the United States after having been secluded in a European collection for several decades.

"With countless numismatic rarities from all U.S. series and several foreign countries scheduled to cross the auction block in California," noted Bob Korver, Heritage Numismatic Auctions Director, "this year's June Long Beach sale promises to be our best ever." Full color photographs of many of the aforementioned highlights are now available on the Heritage website: http://www.heritagecoin.com : Featured Collections. The entire catalog will be offered on Heritage's new Interactive CatalogdiskTM, a feature that will make it even easier for Internet bidders to participate in the sale. More information on consigning to upcoming auctions can be obtained by contacting the Heritage Consignor Hotline at 1-800-US COINS (800-872-6467) Ext. 222.
