Rarities Poised to Cross the Auction Block In Philadelphia
Dallas, Texas: Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. is pleased to announce that their Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale will be conducted August 6-7 at the Courtyard Hotel by Marriott, 21 North Juniper, Philadelphia."We have an impressive line-up of delectable numismatic rarities ready to please bidders of all tastes and budgets," asserted Bob Korver, Heritage's Auction Director. "My personal favorite is an 1855 quarter eagle that PCGS graded MS 63. This coin was struck 5% off center at 5 o'clock and, while this may seem trivial at first, one must remember that all error gold coins are legitimately rare. It is fascinating to speculate first how this specimen escaped the watchful eye of Mint employees, and, secondly, how it weathered the last 145 years while still remaining in such pristine condition."
An incredibly rare 1836 Gobrecht dollar, Judd-36 Restrike is also worthy of special attention. Despite a pedigree that includes such numismatic luminaries as H.O. Granberg, Waldo Newcomer, King Farouk, and Ostheimer, this example disappeared from the public eye following an auction appearance in 1968. It has now re-emerged to accept the attention that its rarity and importance deserve.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the 1802 half dime AU 50 NGC will raise eyebrows when it comes up for auction in Philadelphia," predicted Heritage's Chief Cataloger Mark van Winkle. "The Mint produced only 3,060 half dimes in 1802 and, as such, the issue is one of the classic rarities in U.S. numismatics. For this cataloger, our offering of this About Uncirculated survivor is the measure of a great sale."
Perhaps the single most significant Liberty double eagle in Heritage's upcoming sale is the business strike 1882 in the Barry Southerland Collection. With an original mintage of only 630 pieces, it is little wonder than this coin is one of only 12 extant business strikes. In a PCGS MS 60 holder, this example is also the single finest certified representative available to today's advanced gold specialists.
