Scottsville Collection of Morgan Silver Dollars to be sold in Heritage's September Long Beach Signature Auction
Dallas, Texas: The Scottsville Collection of Morgan Silver Dollars, collected as a father-son effort, will anchor Heritage Numismatic Auctions Inc.'s Sept. 2004 Long Beach Signature Auction. Heritage is the official auctioneer of the Long Beach Coin Expo, and their auctions will be held Sept. 9-11.
The auction catalog will soon be posted at HeritageCoins.com, and the printed catalog will be available in mid-August.
"The Scottsville Collection," explained Heritage President Greg Rohan, "is filled with many eye-appealing Morgan Dollars, all in solid collectable grades. The consignor has spent four decades acquiring rare coins; his earliest efforts were supported by his father. He was only six years old when he started looking through bank rolls and pocket change searching for pennies to fill his Whitman folders. Around 1990, in turn, he encouraged his father to assemble a complete collection of Morgan Dollars, a goal supported through weekly chats with his dad. Five years ago, after the first eighty Dollars were purchased, his father passed away, and the consignor decided to complete the set as a tribute to his dad."
At the time the decision was made to start the Scottsville Morgan Dollar Collection, he and his father chose three criteria to use when deciding which coins to purchase: 1) MS63 grade, as offering a prime combination of affordability, attractiveness, and achievability; 2) absolute white surfaces, offering the highest eye appeal; and 3) certified by PCGS. Early on in the process, they also decided to pursue all of the varieties listed in the Greysheet, rather than the shorter list that PCGS uses in its Registry. This collection philosophy was followed in most cases; however, some higher-grade coins proudly reside in this collection, including an 1895 Dollar in Gem Proof 65 Cameo. One of the reasons it took fourteen years to assemble this collection is the low population of key coins at this grade level, especially the 1892-S (at that time, there were only two coins graded MS63 by PCGS). As might be expected, the Scottsville Collection includes many wonderful coins other than Morgans, and all share the same outstanding eye-appeal.
Featured collections in Heritage's September Long Beach Signature Auction include: The Clear Lake Collection; The Frank O. Fredericks Collection, Part Six; The Greenwich Collection, Part Three; The Clarke Marie Collection, Part One; The Estate of John Naylor, Part Three; The Professor Wayne Newman Palmer Collection, Part Two; The Scottsville Collection of Morgan Silver Dollars; The Melvin D. Souza Collection; and The Ken Zakaluk Collection of Early American Silver Dollars.
