A. James Evans' Pattern Collection to Anchor Heritage's Palm Beach Signature Auction
Dallas, Texas: An exciting collection of Pattern Coinage formed by A. James Evans will be offered by Heritage Numismatic Auctions in its inaugural Palm Beach Signature Auction, November 4-6, 2004. The accompanying Palm Beach Coin Show is being sponsored by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and Heritage.
According to Heritage President Greg Rohan, "Mr. Evans took a somewhat circuitous route to his Pattern specialty. As a young man, he started collecting old coins out of circulation - when it was still possible to find Indian Cents, Liberty Nickels, and the occasional Barber piece in bank rolls. When he decided to rekindle his numismatic interests in 1990, he thought back to those simple pleasures pursuing Liberty Nickels, and how interesting it would be to seriously concentrate on them. At one of the first coin shows Mr. Evans attended, he spotted a Liberty Nickel Pattern in a dealer's display case. He grabbed it, and that first piece, he now recalls, "inspired a numismatic epiphany." From that point, Mr. Evans devoted his considerable resources and attention to pursuing Pattern coins."
Among the interesting patterns from the Evans Collection:
- 1866 Five Cents, Judd-461, Pollock-535, R.5, PR66 NGC (popular Washington head)
- 1871 Five Cents, Judd-1050, Pollock-1184, Low R.6, PR63 PCGS
- 1883 Liberty Head Five Cents, Judd-1714, Pollock-1919, Low R.6, PR64 NGC
- 1859 Quarter Dollar, Judd-234, Pollock-281, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS (the finest certified)
