Heritage to Auction U.S. and World Rarities in Long Beach
Dallas, Texas: Scheduled for October 5-7 at the Long Beach Convention Center, Heritage's October 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale will offer many fabulous numismatic treasures to collectors of all tastes and specialties. "As the official auction of the Long Beach Coin Expo, this sale is sure to attract significant bidder attention," noted Heritage's Director of Auctions Bob Korver. "Of course, our extensive mail list and strong Internet presence will also help to guarantee that each coin will receive maximum exposure in the collecting community. Higher bids, higher prices realized - that's the trend that continues to make Heritage and the Long Beach Coin Expo successful auction partners."The gold offerings in the Long Beach Sale include a trio of 1909 examples that were obtained in Philadelphia at the time of issue. "The 1909 Indian eagle and the two 1909 Indian half eagles represent the kind of coins that both dealers and collectors love to see at auction," observed Heritage Executive VP Greg Rohan. "A local Philadelphia family preserved these coins for the last 91 years, and the coins' levels of preservation are the fruits of their labor. The Indian eagle grades MS 66 and the two half eagles grade MS 65. All three coins are undeniably original with eye appeal that is superior to their already impressive technical quality."
A consignment of Canadian rarities from the Howard Collection stands out among the numerous important world issues. Of particular interest to specialists are the two 1921 Canadian half dollars graded Specimen 61 by PCGS. "The 1921 50 cent piece, while not the rarest Canadian coin, is without question the most famous, most publicized, and most sought-after issue in the entire Canadian numismatic series," stated Warren Tucker, Heritage's world coin cataloger. "While it is an honor to offer just one of these coins for auction, the fact that we have two similarly graded representatives speaks volumes about the importance of the Long Beach Sale for advanced Canadian collectors." Also being offered as part of the Howard Collection are seven 1923 Canadian George V cents graded Specimen 63-64 Brown by PCGS.
Perhaps the two most fascinating coins in the Long Beach Signature Sale are the 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 Round and Octagonal commemoratives from the collection of Frank J. Hein. "A collector of extraordinary insight, Hein assembled a small but impressive collection of gold rarities by the time of his death in 1949," continued Rohan. "His family safeguarded these treasures until this year, when one of his granddaughters brought the coins into the shop of St. Louis dealer Bill Smith. The story of Hein and his collection appeared on the front page of the May 30, 2000 edition of Numismatic News, but the four most important coins did not sell when Smith offered them at the Mid-America Coin Expo. Two of these pieces, the Panama-Pacific slugs, will now be offered in our October 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale. Both coins are simply stunning. The Round example is a strong MS 64, and the Octagonal is a no-questions Gem with legitimate claim to finest known status for the issue."
The classic Mercury dime series is also well represented in Heritage's upcoming sale. According to Korver: "The Joshua Collection of Mercury dimes was consigned to us after Senator Bassano's collection realized extraordinary prices in our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale. The Joshua coins are every bit the equal of Bassano's in terms of both eye appeal and technical quality. In fact, PCGS has graded 16 of the Joshua dimes higher than their similarly dated counterparts in the Bassano Collection. I urge Mercury dime specialists to take full advantage of the opportunity that this wonderful collection represents." Highlights include:
