1873 2C Closed 3 PR65 Red and Brown NGC. With a mintage of only 600 pieces, this final year of issue was destined to become a collector favorite. The Closed 3 coins are known as the originals of this year, the restrikes being struck at some uncertain time later. The Closed 3 coins, in addition to the configuration of the final digit of the date, also show complete horizontal shield lines, whereas the restrikes show central weakness in that area. The surfaces of the present coin show deep golden-brown speckled patina and highly reflective fields, with no apparent handling marks. The design elements are sharply struck throughout.

The design features reveal adequate definition, except that portions of the horizontal and vertical stripes are soft. A small planchet anomaly is noted in the left (facing) reverse field. This piece has light tan lustrous surfaces, and reveals some minor grade-defining marks on the shield. 1877 5C PR66 Cameo NGC. Deeply mirrored fields and a completely untoned appearance dominate the outward appearance of both sides. One should not, however, overlook the powerfully impressed, frosty textured devices. Of course, every feature is free of bothersome handling marks, and the eye appeal alone would do justice to an even higher grade. Minor planchet porosity is evident under a loupe, but we stress that this feature is as struck and common to most survivors of this proof issue. Population: 24 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (10/05).

1879/8 5C PR66 PCGS. The familiar curve of an underdigit 8 below the upper loop of the 9 in the date confirms this popular variety. A well struck Premium Gem with pastel golden-brown toning around the peripheries, framing ice-blue patina in the centers. Well preserved, except for a couple of unobtrusive marks on the right (facing) vertical stripes of the shield. PCGS has seen only 27 specimens grading finer (9/05).

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse VF25 PCGS. FS-016. The key date to the Buffalo Nickel series, the 1916 Doubled Die is tougher than the 1918/7-D, and is much tougher than the famous 1937-D Three Legged Nickel. Despite 35 points of wear, the widely separated secondary date is obvious to the southeast. Although the pick-up point is the date, die doubling is also noticeable on the feathers and profile. Lilac-gray in color with glimpses of russet freckles and a few streaks of olive-brown toning. Wear is even, and no marks distract, particularly when the grade is considered. Perfect for the collector who seeks a collectible but nicely detailed middle grade example. Population: 8 in 25, 65 finer (10/05).
