1870 $1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. The 1870 (416,000 pieces produced) may be one of the more common Seated Dollars in business strike format, but survivors of that issue are virtually unobtainable at the Gem level of preservation. There is, however, a not insignificant number of specimen strikings extant in PR65, these coins being strong candidates for inclusion in high quality date and type sets. Both sides of the example in this lot display ample evidence of having been carefully preserved since the time of striking. There is not a single outwardly distracting hairline or contact mark. Furthermore, the eye appeal benefits greatly from readily evident cameo contrast between the crisp devices and placid fields. Both sides are untoned with the exception of a few isolated blushes of tan iridescence in select peripheral areas. A coin that is sure to please even the most discriminating numismatist. 1859 1C MS66 PCGS. With the Indian Cent design as adopted on Cents from 1860 through 1909 on the obverse, and the laurel wreath reverse that was only used in this year, the 1859 has proved to be a type coin of enduring popularity. This piece has taken on an attractive overlay of reddish patina on each side with bright mint luster throughout. Well struck, the only noticeable abrasion is a short, angling mark on the Native American's neck. One of the finest pieces known. Population: 10 in 66, 0 finer (1/03).

1860 1C Pointed Bust MS66 PCGS. The Pointed Bust design had been in use on patterns since 1858, but was changed early in the year, possibly to increase die life. Business strikes are quite scarce with an estimated mintage of only half a million out of the more than 20 million coins produced in 1860. Snow states that most of the Uncirculated specimens that are known come from a hoard of 25-50 pieces. This is a fully struck example that has light lemony-yellow surfaces that show just a hint of red. The obverse appears immaculate and we only see two tiny marks on the reverse. 1860 1C MS66 PCGS. Commonly called the Type Two Obverse, the bust is on this hub type is broader. This change and the deeper sinking of the central head of the Indian in the hub were undoubtedly done to improve the striking details of the coins. Better struck on the reverse than the obverse, the surfaces have a pebbly finish and are highly lustrous. The copper-nickel alloy has taken on an attractive purplish patina on the obverse, while the reverse is a lovely reddish-brown. As one would expect from the grade, there are no obvious marks on either side. Population: 26 in 66, 7 finer (1/03).

1861 1C MS66 PCGS. Second year of issue for the copper-nickel type, the 1861 has the lowest mintage in this short and highly collectible series. As with most business strikes from this year, this piece is a bit softly struck on the tips of the first two feathers, but the diamonds on the ribbon are full. The surfaces are light in color, especially on the obverse, with a bit of reddish patina on the reverse. A lustrous, attractive, and high grade example of this scarcer issue. 1863 1C MS66 PCGS. The 1863 had the largest mintage of business strikes of the type with almost 50 million pieces produced. In fact, this number would not be surpassed until the end of the century. As a result, high grade coins are sometimes available for type purposes. This is a bright, lustrous example that is very light in color. The only mentionable flaw we see is a certain softness on the tips of the feathers in the headdress--a common occurrence on Copper-Nickel Cents. Population: 20 in 66, 0 finer (1/03).

1864 1C Bronze MS65 Red PCGS. Snow speculates that there may be a large number of fully struck 1864 Bronze Cents because the Mint used the same striking pressure on the new bronze alloy as they did to strike the copper-nickel coins. Pinpoint striking definition is seen on the feather tips as well as on the shield lines. The texture of the surfaces displays the granularity often seen on this issue as well as reddish-golden color.

1864 1C L On Ribbon MS65 Red PCGS. This low mintage issue signaled the use of a new obverse hub, the most significant design changes being the addition of the L on the ribbon and a narrowing of the point of the bust. Only 5 million pieces were produced and examples command a significant premium in all grades. Gems are scarce with only 30 pieces so graded by PCGS and three finer (1/03). Even mint color covers both sides of this lovely Gem, the only detracting element being slight softness on the feather tips on the headdress.

1868 1C MS65 Red PCGS. One of the characteristics of 1868 Cents is weakness around the rims, legends, and shield. This piece shows some softness in those areas, but in reality it is probably not something that the casual viewer would notice. The Gem surfaces display a rich overlay of reddish patina with an undertone of original orange-red luster. A couple of carbons spots on the reverse prevent an even higher grade. 1869 1C MS65 Red PCGS. On New Year's Day of 1869, James Barton Longacre passed away suddenly at the age of 75. His Indian Cent design continued for several decades with different Chief Engravers guiding what subtle changes had to be made in the design. William Barber succeeded Longacre in that capacity and served ably for the next ten years until his death in 1879. The 1869 is another low mintage, early issue with only 6.42 million pieces produced. As one would expect, Gems are very elusive and coins with full red color are even more difficult to locate. This piece has rich, even red color over both sides and is fully struck throughout. Die clashing is seen on each side. Population: 25 in 65, 6 finer (1/03).

1870 1C MS65 Red PCGS. After William Barber took over the job of Chief Engraver after Longacre's untimely death the previous year, he made slight modifications to the reverse hub. Without going into detail, this single year is represented by three different hub varieties. This particular coin was struck from the old Type One hub, which had been in use since 1864. It is immediately recognizable by the shallow N at the bottom of ONE. The obverse is especially well struck, with only slight softness evident on the shield on the upper reverse. Orange-red and cherry-red coloration is intermixed over both sides and the coin is well balanced in appearance. There are no obvious abrasions on either side and just a few specks of deeper color are evident on the reverse. Population: 29 in 65, 4 finer (1/03).

Just to the right of the E in ONE is a small, but grade-limiting carbon spot.

1873 1C Open 3 MS65 Red PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. While the more frequently encountered of the two date variants of the year, both Open and Closed 3 varieties have been collected for many years. Chief Coiner A. L. Snowden brought it to the attention of his superiors in January that it appeared that the mint was striking 1878 dated coins five years too early! As a result, a new date punch was created with a more open and easily discernible 3. This is a solidly graded coin that shows even, light red color over both sides and no obvious abrasions are apparent without magnification (and then they are still tiny). Sharply struck throughout with strong definition on the feather tips as well as the shield on the reverse. Population: 20 in 65, 3 finer (1/03).

This date is known to have streaky toning because of improperly mixed bronze alloy. However, this piece has even red coloration over both sides with no mellowing. 1877 1C MS64 Red PCGS. The Mint Act of 1864, which created the bronze Cent, also stipulated that the new coin would be legal tender in quantities that equalled no greater than 10 cents. This clause had a disastrous affect on banks--unable to move large quantities of bronze Cents, such coins simply accumulated in their vaults. It seems as though Uncle Sam eventually took pity on the nation's bankers because the Mint Act of March 3, 1871 required the Mint to redeem large quantities of minor coins from banks. During the first few years following passage of the latter act, the Mint melted all redeemed minor coins for recoinage. Later, however, government policy was simply to place the redeemed coins back into circulation. Since this process of redistribution peaked in 1877, there was no need for the Philadelphia Mint to produce large quantities of new Indian Cents. The result was a key date issue with an original mintage of just 852,500 pieces.

A prized business strike of the fabled 1877 Indian Cent, this near-Gem is possessed of full reddish-orange luster. The strike is appreciably bold in most areas, but we do note a little bluntness of detail over the bottom of the obverse portrait. Free of distracting abrasions with just a few scattered carbon flecks precluding a Gem rating.

1878 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Production of Indian Cents in 1878 was sizeable compared to that in 1877. On the other hand, the delivery of the 1878 (5.7 million pieces) is limited relative to most of the following dates in this series. Perhaps not surprisingly, therefore, the 1878 is a conditionally challenging issue that is downright rare as a fully lustrous Gem. This otherwise cherry-red representative reveals some lighter pink color around the obverse periphery with orange-gold hues in the corresponding area on the reverse. Swirling cartwheel visual effects grace both sides and accent the crisply detailed features. There is not a single blemish of note on either side of this accurately graded survivor. Population: 8 in 66 Red, only 1 finer (1/03).

1879 1C MS66 Red PCGS. The base of the 1 shows the usual light repunching at the base, and also as usual, the features are exceptionally well detailed with strong definition on the feather tips in the headdress and on reverse shield. The diamonds on the ribbon are also well brought up with only slight softness seen on the second one from the bottom. Rich, even, original red color covers both sides with just a hint of pale lime-green color seen around the margin on the reverse. One of the finest 1879 Cents we can remember having seen, and judging from the population data from the two major services this is one of the finest coins extant today from the 16.3 million pieces originally produced. Population: 10 in 66, 2 finer (1/03).
