1852 1C MS67 Brown NGC. N-16, R.1. Minute mint-made die lumps on ONE CENT confirm the Newcomb variety. Only the fifth star is not crisply struck, and the remainder of the devices are well rendered by the dies. A virtually pristine Superb Gem that will satisfy even the most demanding specialist. Generally golden-brown in color, although ample hints of original Red are also present despite the Brown designation.

1936 5C Type One--Satin Finish PR67 NGC. When proof coinage resumed in 1936, the first cents and nickels produced had a satiny finish. This was distinctly different from the previous matte and brilliant finishes, but it was a short-lived experiment. Like the matte finish coins from the teens, these piece showed extraordinary striking details--details that can only be seen on a proof. The overall finish is satiny with no real reflectivity seen in the fields. This piece shows the often-seen golden and lilac toning seen on nickel products, and there are no obvious surface distractions apparent other than a few tiny specks of carbon (magnification is required).

1936 50C PR67 NGC. Only 3,901 proof halves were struck in 1936, the first year of official proof production for this denomination since 1915. As with the other denominations from this year, the proof half (when encountered) has often been cleaned or shows some signs of mishandling. This is a Superb Gem proof that shows evidence of having been struck from heavily polished dies, with the resultant deep mirrors in the fields. The coin basically presents as brilliant but it has a slight overlay of rose-lilac toning when closely examined. Population: 54 in 67, 0 finer (1/05).

1878 7TF $1 Reverse of 1879 MS66 PCGS. According to Wayne Miller, probably fewer than 20% of all BU 1878 7 Tail Feather dollars are of the Round Breast type (the Reverse of 1879). This is a rare premium quality Gem example of this scarce 1878 variety. The coin's surfaces are frosty and radiant under a partial layer of milky, silvery-gray patina. The striking characteristics are excellent, and include nearly complete details on the eagle's breast feathers and talons, as well as over Liberty's ear. Most of what appear to be surface blemishes, on the reverse, are actually die clash marks (as struck), with one or two exceptions, and these are quite trivial. The obverse is also very clean, as expected for the assigned grade. Population: 6 in 66, 0 finer (1/05).

1879-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. Only 756,000 pieces were struck of the 1879-CC dollar. The reason for this remarkably low mintage (according to Bowers) is that confiscatory tariffs by the railroads made it cheaper to send Comstock silver hundreds of miles to the San Francisco mint to be turned into coins rather than send it 15 miles to the Carson City mint. The 1879-CC was very scarce for several decades after issuance--Augustus Heaton said of the 1879-CC: "It is not very common." It was only after the early 1940s that several bags of '79-CC dollars became available to collectors. This is a splendid, upper-end MS64 example that is brilliant throughout and displays brilliant surfaces with the strong luster characteristics this issue is known for. Strongly impressed with minimal abrasions for a '79-CC.

VAM-4 is also popular due to its prominent overdate, the 79 underdigits are irrefutable. A dusting of tan color denies full brilliance. The 1880-CC is not known for its sharp strike, but the definition on the present piece is certainly above average, since the hair above the ear is well delineated and has only a hint of softness. This carefully preserved Gem will be a highlight of any Carson City holding.
