The mint luster is still largely intact, with an overlay of brownish-blue patina on each side. Spot-free and problem-free with sharply defined features. A small retained cud rests on the right reverse rim, between 2 and 3 o'clock. A well balanced coin that represents good value with so much of the original cherry-red color still in evidence. It is easy enough to locate as a proof, but unquestioned business strikes are very elusive, and premium Gem examples are especially desirable. Exactingly struck, even the left ear of corn is fully detailed, and the dazzling cartwheel sheen and multiple slender die cracks leave no doubt of its commercial strike status. 1830 H10C MS66 NGC. V-3, LM-4.1, R-2. A faint die crack through the first star helps identify the variety. Earlier die state, lacking the die chip in the upper loop of the second S of STATES. Lustrous silvery surfaces are untoned save for a few streaks of reddish-orange color across the lower obverse periphery. Very well struck save for the eagle's beak and left wingtip (facing), which show isolated softness. Census: 25 in 66, 4 finer (11/05).

1900-O 10C MS65 PCGS. David Lawrence called the 1900-O "The most underrated coin in the set. In circulated grades above VG its scarcity rivals the 1895-O. In Mint State it is even tougher." This is a satiny example that has medium golden patina with glimpses of steel-blue color near the obverse margin. Just a bit softly struck on the upper right reverse border. A slender cud (as made) is noted on the obverse rim between 1 and 3 o'clock. Population: 12 in 65, 3 finer (10/05).

1916-D 10C MS64 Full Bands PCGS. The 1916-D Dime is probably the most famous issue of the denomination, better known than the unique 1873-CC No Arrows Dime, the extremely rare 1894-S Dime, and the much hyped "Little Orphan Annie" 1844 Dime. While Mercury Dime specialists are also well aware of the scarcity of the 1919-D or 1926-S in high Mint State grades, it is the appearance of the low mintage 1916-D that commands the attention of the collector. The present lustrous near-Gem has beautiful light golden-brown peripheral toning, and the preservation is exemplary despite a couple of wispy marks near the eye and forehead. The strike is not quite 100% full in the centers, but the eye appeal is formidable, and it will take any Mercury Dime collection to the next level of importance.

1921 10C MS65 Full Bands NGC. By the middle of 1921, the Philadelphia Mint had produced all of the Dimes that it would until 1923. This amounted to a delivery of just 1.2 million pieces, survivors of which are elusive in all but the lowest circulated grades. Surprisingly, most Mint State representatives display Full Bands definition, but the problem as far as collectors are concerned will come in locating one of these, particularly if MS65 is the grade of choice. Nearly brilliant, although the patient observer will locate selected faint tan toning on the reverse. The crisp strike extends from the centers to the peripheries, and the surfaces are as made aside from a few tiny ticks on the fasces.

1893-O 25C MS66 NGC. There is a wide variance in striking definition on 1893-O Quarters. Some are well brought up, such as this piece, and others are, well let's just say, not quite as nice. The mint luster on this coin is exceptional and frosted in nature, more suggestive of an S-mint than a coin from New Orleans. The surfaces are smooth and almost free of abrasions, and the mint brilliance is surrounded by a ring of pale golden over the denticles on each side. Census: 6 in 66, 5 finer (11/05).

1896-S 25C MS65 PCGS. Obverse 1, Reverse 1. The 1896-S Quarter has long been considered one of the three key issues in the Barber Quarter series, along with the even more challenging 1901-S and the lower mintage but less difficult 1913-S. The 1896-S was struck with only two sets of obverse and reverse dies. The Obverse 1, Reverse 1 pair seems to be the more available among the few certified high grade examples, and is best identified by the mintmark location, slightly closer to the D in DOLLAR than the R in QUARTER.
One can hardly imagine a more formidable challenge than assembling a set of Gem Barber Quarters. The 1896-S is one of the stoppers to such a collection, however, the present lot provides an exceptional opportunity to acquire a high quality Gem. The strike is penetrating, even on the usually problematic right shield corner, and the lustrous and mildly reflective fields are unperturbed by contact. Only a hint of gold color denies full brilliance. A gorgeous example of this famous rarity, the subject of avid chase even in barely identifiable condition. Population: 9 in 65, 1 finer (10/05).

1901-O 25C MS65 NGC. Per David Lawrence (1994), the 1901-O is the seventh rarest Barber Quarter in Mint State. This should come as no surprise if one stops to consider that virtually the entire delivery of 1.6 million coins entered circulation in the early 20th century. Both sides of this important Gem quality condition rarity are overlaid in satiny mint luster. A dusting of honey-tan patina is also seen, but the surfaces are equally free of bothersome striking incompleteness and distracting bagmarks. Census: 8 in 65, 1 finer (10/05).

1908-S 25C MS65 NGC. Writing in 1994, David Lawrence (The Complete Guide to Barber Quarters) states that the 1908-S is "one of my favorite dates. Comes with a decent strike and nice luster. Never stays in stock--trouble-free coins of any grade sell immediately." The popularity of this issue should be obvious if one notes that the original mintage is just 784,000 pieces. Lawrence also notes that this date is "undervalued in most mint state grades. Even though gems are no bargain compared with some other dates, you should not let one go." An attractive coin that represents a significant bidding opportunity for the advanced specialist, both sides are sharply struck with satin textured features. Untoned save for delicate golden-champagne rim accents. The reverse is essentially pristine. The obverse has faint mint-made roller marks near the cheekbone in addition to a couple of tiny ticks.
