1837 H10C Large Date (Curl Top 1) MS66 PCGS. Close examination reveals the remnants of the initial punchings of the bottom of the digits of the date. The surfaces themselves are extraordinarily clean with a loupe required to locate any post-striking impairments. As with most Uncirculated examples of this date, the mint luster is exceptionally bright. The obverse is covered in sea-green and rose patina, while the reverse displays a nearly uniform layer of thalo blue. Population: 30 in 66, 3 finer (6/06).

1875-S 20C MS67 NGC. While it seemed like such a good idea, the twenty-cent piece proposed by Nevada Senator John Percival Jones was bound to fail. The purpose of this denomination was to ease transactions of low-priced items, especially those selling for five or ten cents, especially on the West coast. The half dime was no longer being coined, and minor coinage was not being produced in San Francisco at the time, nor would it be until the first cents of 1908. A consumer who desired to buy an item priced at five cents would need to use a dime, if one was available, and no change would be given, for none was available. Senator Jones felt that such an item could be bought using a quarter, and one of the new 20-cent pieces could then be given out in change. The problem was not so much the concept, but the size and design, which were so similar to the existing quarter dollar that the two coins were easily confused. These coins were produced for circulation only in 1875 and 1876, and the series continued for two more years only in proof format.

This example is one of the finest survivors that we have seen. In fact, a review of the NGC Census (6/06) reveals that only 13 examples of the entire type have been graded MS67, with one MS67★ , and one MS68 example. This is a fully original example with frosty and highly lustrous ivory surfaces that are enhanced by light iridescent toning. The peripheral design details are somewhat softly struck, as often for this denomination. This Superb Gem retains exceptional eye appeal; an outstanding example in every regard. 1888 25C MS68 NGC. Only 10,000 business strikes were coined, and examples are seldom seen, although they are usually frosty and lustrous when they are encountered. Breen commented that this date was less hoarded than some of the early quarter dollars in the 1880s. Most business strike examples are found in or near Mint State grades, although almost never like the present specimen. This is an amazing Superb Gem with ivory color at the center of the obverse, surrounded by russet, sea-green, and gold toning. The reverse is similar with mostly rose color at the centers, framed by teal and gold. The pattern of toning is reminiscent of pieces from old time collections. Census: 3 in 68, 0 finer (6/06).

For this date and mint the strike is exceptional with no sign of weakness seen, even the eagle's claws and the arrow feathers all of which are bold. Importantly, the combined NGC and PCGS Population reports show six coins graded this high, with none seen finer of this date (6/06).

1839 50C Drapery MS64 NGC. Ocean-blue, plum, and orange invigorate this shimmering and carefully preserved near-Gem. The strike is intricate across the centers, although the eagle's left (facing) ankle and a few stars lack absolute detail. The first Seated half dollars, also struck in 1839, did not have drapery beneath the elbow. That was shortly rectified, however, and drapery remained with the design until its 1891 demise. 1893-O 50C MS66 NGC. Although this issue in available in Mint State, the great majority of pieces at both services are in MS62 through MS64. Gems are rarely seen, and Premium Gems even less so. In addition to its condition rarity, this example is a fabulous find both for Barber half aficionados as well as color collectors. It is tied with three pieces at PCGS atop the Condition Census of certified pieces. Both sides offer superb luster but differing color palettes. The obverse boasts silver-gray centers with bold amber, magenta, and blue at the periphery, while the reverse sports a center of ice-blue that melds into mint-green and auburn at the borders. This issue is among the most poorly struck in the series, but this coin is the exception, with better details on the right (facing) shield corner and the eagle's right claw than usual. Unimprovable! 1899-S 50C MS68 PCGS. The single finest example of this date certified by PCGS or NGC in 20 years of numismatic certification. It is our belief that this is the finest known example of the issue. Not even the Eliasberg coin, which was purchased by John Clapp directly from the San Francisco Mint in 1899, is as nice as this example. We have handled this identical coin on two previous occasions, along with a single MS67 that we sold in January 2005 as part of the John Hugon Collection. Otherwise, MS66 is the best grade that we have seen over many years.

This is an exceptional Superb Gem Barber half dollar. Both sides have a full strike with every design element showing crisp detail, exactly as Charles Barber intended. This splendid half dollar will easily satisfy the connoisseur. The surfaces have warm, original silvery-gray color with considerable blue, rose, and gold toning on the obverse and mostly vivid gold on the reverse. Although a few tiny abrasions are evident in the hidden areas of the design, these are only visible with magnification. While population figures have increased recently as a result of numerous resubmissions, this date is rare in any grade finer than MS64. The top four Barber half dollar collections in the PCGS Set Registry would each benefit from the addition of this specimen, with current examples that grade MS67, MS67, MS66, and MS64. Population: 1 in 68, 0 finer (6/06).

Among these Uncirculated survivors, most grade between MS62 to MS64. The increasingly popular Barber series have far more collectors than the quantity of high grade pieces can supply. 1910-S 50C MS67 NGC. Well struck and highly lustrous, with a rich frosty sheen over both sides and essentially untoned silver-white surfaces. Faint roller marks are noted on Liberty's cheek, and a couple of tiny nicks are evident on the jaw and upper neck, but these are nearly invisible without the aid of magnification. Although close to 2 million 1910-S half dollars were produced, those coins were required in commerce and surprisingly few were set aside by contemporary collectors. As a result, fewer than 100 Mint State survivors are known, and this marvelous Superb Gem must be counted among the finest of those. NGC and PCGS together have certified just four coins at MS67, with two more at MS68 (6/06).
