1873 1C Doubled LIBERTY AU55 ICG. Snow-1. This is an exceptionally attractive Indian Cent for the AU55 grade irrespective of date or variety. Both sides are smooth with an evenly toned, chocolate-brown sheen. There are no spots, and the surfaces are equally free of distracting circulation marks. The overall sharp definition includes impressive detail on the obverse doubling.

1922 No D 1C Weak Reverse MS63 Red and Brown NGC. Die Pair Three. Whereas '22 No D Cents of Die Pair Two were likely caused by overzealous polishing of the obverse die, those of Die Pairs One and Three seem to have resulted from contaminents filling the mintmark cavity at the time of striking. Coins struck from the latter two die marriages are typically softly defined due to excessive die wear. The present example displays a typically weak reverse, but the obverse is appreciably bold for the variety. Plenty of orange-red luster is seen through mottled medium brown patina. One or two spots are all that seem to preclude an even higher grade.

1858 $1 PR63 PCGS. We have sold very few 1858 Seated Dollars recently. We offered three in one sale (the 1998 ANA Auction), but since that time only five others have been consigned--an average of one per year. The 1858 Dollar is widely known and is one of the few issues that is recognized outside of the Seated Dollar collecting fraternity. It was believed for many years that only 80 or so pieces were produced, all proofs. However, judging from the number of appearances at public auction over several decades and those offered privately, Bowers revised the estimate of the number struck sharply upward to the 250-300 range. This is an attractive, deeply mirrored proof that is mostly brilliant on each side. There are just a couple of thin dashes of pale russet patina at the top of the reverse. The only surface flaws of note are a tiny crack in the planchet next to star 4, and an oval-shaped planchet flaw below the eagle's left (facing) wing.

1878 8TF $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. According to Bowers (1993), Deep Mirror Prooflike 1878 8TF Morgans are two-to-three times rarer than their Prooflike counterparts. This gorgeous Gem displays a mostly brilliant sheen with reflectivity in all areas save for the central obverse. Liberty's portrait is lightly, yet appreciably frosted in the latter area. There are no singularly mentionable abrasions, and the strike is sharp in all but one or two isolated areas (the hair atop Liberty's ear being the most noticeable). Otherwise untoned with some delicate champagne and orange-red tinting at the upper obverse and lower reverse denticles.

1878-CC $1 MS66 Prooflike PCGS. A fully prooflike representative of this important condition rarity among first-year Morgan Dollars, both sides are possessed of needle sharp striking definition in all areas. The silver-white features are untoned with modest, yet appreciable contrast between the devices and glowing fields. Grade-limiting abrasions are conspicuous by their absence, although pedigree concerns do compel us to mention a tiny, hardly conspicuous spot in the obverse field before the P in PLURIBUS. Population: 6 in 66 Prooflike, none are finer with this finish (1/03).

1879-CC $1 MS64 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. One of several high quality '79-CC Morgans with a Deep Mirror Prooflike finish in this sale, both sides are devoid of even the lightest toning. There are also few bagmarks to impede one's appreciation of the glowing, reflective fields and sharp, suitably well frosted devices. One or two grazes over the obverse portrait and the eagle's breast on the reverse are all that seem to bar this radiant example from a full Gem rating. Select angles reveal faint striations (as produced) in the fields-- features that are, no doubt, indicative of the die polishing that also resulted in the DMPL finish. NGC Population: 9 in 64 Deep Mirror Prooflike, there is only one finer.

1879-S $1 MS67 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Ex: Naples II. The collector who desires a Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgan Dollar for their type set would be wise to select a representative of the 1879-S delivery. We caution bidders that, while the '79-S is among the more plentiful Morgans in DMPL, most survivors are confined to grades below the MS66 level. Those few coins (there are just eight known to NGC and PCGS, and none are finer, 11/02) that grade as fine as MS67 easily qualify for Condition Census standing. This is a simply beautiful Superb Gem, both sides displaying bright, essentially untoned features. We have no complaints about the strike (it is sharp, if not full in all areas), nor can we find a single abrasion that is worthy of mention. One would be wise to enter a premium bid for this gorgeous, impressively pedigreed representative.
