This coin was previously offered as lot 5645 in our May 2000 Central States Sale, where it was cataloged as: "A noticeably worn, although problem-free survivor of this early Colonial issue. Both sides show smooth chocolate-brown surfaces with blushes of crimson and green coloration intermingled throughout. Poorly defined over the central reverse." Listed on page 25 of the 2000 Guide Book. (PCGS# 55)

Undated (1694) London Elephant Token VF 20. Thick Planchet (2.7 mm). 227.0 grains. Breen-186. The surfaces are a pleasing medium brown color, and are especially smooth on the obverse with only one small planchet defect to the right of the elephant (planchets of this issue usually do show some defects). One small rim dent is also located at 10 o'clock on the obverse, but doesn't extend as far in as the denticles. Overall, this is an attractive example that is collected for its connection to the much rarer Carolina and New England elephant tokens. (PCGS# 55)

1786 Vermont Copper Fine 12 Corroded. Bust Left. Ryder-10, R.4. 7.66 grams. Although this piece is technically corroded, most likely it was produced from a rough planchet, as Tony Carlotto states that as the planchet quality is poor on all Vermont coppers from 1785 and 1786, "it is at its worst on the bust left coins." This variety is not usually found much finer, as ample detail is present despite the rough surfaces. The planchet is dark tan in color, and is somewhat lighter on the devices. this lot is accompanied by a photo certificate from the Early American Coin Club that is signed by Walter Breen and Bert Cunningham, and attests to the genuine status and grade of this piece. This charming specimen of our nation's first half cent coinage is porous and dark throughout, and possesses a thin, shallow horizontal scratch across the lower right obverse. Despite these distractions, much detail is visible, and the overall appearance is not unattractive. Pleasing overall, and certain to garner much attention. (PCGS# 1000)

1805 1/2 C Small 5, Stems Fine 12 Corroded. B-2, C-2, R.6. An example of the rare Breen-2 variety, and among the finest known examples. Medium brown and attractive overall, it displays unfortunate light corrosion on the upper half of Liberty's portrait and in the right obverse field, and two tiny corrosion spots on the reverse in the center. The obverse has a series of several small digs or short scratches on Liberty's bust and neck, but these are not readily noticeable without close examination, and they should serve as useful pedigree identifiers in the future. There is also a small rim bump at 4 o'clock on the obverse, and a tiny dig in the right reverse field below the A in AMERICA. The denomination on the reverse has stronger definition than usual for this variety, and the die characteristics are easily distinguishable. The balance of the surfaces are glossy and smooth.

Interestingly, this piece was consigned by a long-time collector as a type example of the Draped Bust design! A more common variety would have served the purpose filled by this specimen, but to the delight of the consignor and our cataloging staff, it proved to be a very special coin. It is estimated that approximately 30 pieces are known from this die combination, the rarer of the two 1805 Small 5, Stems varieties. Most survivors, however, are in lower grades. While this example is not problem-free, it is attractive overall, and remains a well detailed example of this highly sought after variety. Certain to generate considerable interest among students and specialists of the early copper series. (PCGS# 1087)
