1862 1C PR67 NGC. The 1862 is one of the more available dates in the copper-nickel series and it is also one of the better produced issues. This piece represents the best of the best. The fields are deeply mirrored, impressively so for a copper-nickel product, and the surfaces are nearly perfect. Beautifully toned, each side displays original red with lilac-lavender patina interspersed. A wonderfully preserved and visually pleasing proof coin. Population: 6 in 67, 0 finer (11/04). 1838-D $5 --Cleaned--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF45. McCloskey 1-A, R.3. Third scarcest issue of the Classic half eagle type, the '38-D is a very desirable issue for collectors as it is the only Dahlonega issue of this type and it is also the first year of production from this scarce and popular Southern mint. This is a well defined example that shows no obvious marks on either side. A bit dull from cleaning, the effects of which are greatly subdued by an overlay of reddish patina. (PCGS# 8178)

1787 COPPER Connecticut Copper, Draped Bust Left AU55 PCGS. M. 33.25-Z.10, R.6. A bold golden-brown example, virtually devoid of abrasions but with the faint mint-made planchet streaks that are unavoidable for the type. Struck several degrees off center toward 11 o'clock, the lowest portion of the date is off the flan. A late die stage of this rare variety, heavy die cracks (as made) journey below the hair ribbons and along the left border of the bust truncation. An important piece for the specialist. Listed on page 49 of the 2005 Guide Book. (PCGS# 370)

1794 1C Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent, NEW YORK MS66 Brown PCGS. These trade tokens were of great importance to the young American republic as they were extensively used in the channels of commerce in the 1790s, and many were cut down and used as planchets for half cents in 1795. Very rarely is a TAL encountered with this degree of preservation. The surfaces are glossy with brown centers and a significant presence of original red still in evidence around the margins. Undated PENNY Washington Liberty & Security Penny AU50 PCGS. Baker-30D. Very Rare. About nine pieces are estimated to exist today with this fire gilt/copper finish. Prior to the coin being encapsulated, SEM-EDX analysis was done of the surface. The report reads in part: "The surface of the coin showed an irregular distribution of two metals--copper and gold. The coin is therefore either copper incompletely plated with gold or an inhomogeneous mixture of these two metals. Tarnishing from sulfur and chloride attack and some silicon (from dirt) were also observed on the surface."

Since no mixture of copper and gold is known for this issue, we must conclude this is a fire gilt specimen that has lost significant portions of the gilt over the years, exposing the copper planchet. The gilt still remains around the devices and within the recesses, but the fields and highpoints of the design elements are copper. Extremely rare as such, and the first we have seen of this variety. The latest Rulau-Fuld reference on Washington pieces (1999) lists this variety at $800 in VF, $3,000 in Unc. (PCGS# 767)

1797 1/2 C Plain Edge AU58 NGC. B-1, C-1, R.4. An interesting variety with a second 1 far above the final 1 in the date that is easily discernible to the naked eye. This coin looks like it was struck from misaligned dies as the left portions of each side are weakly struck while there is good detail on the right sides. Even, dark brown color throughout, an interesting die break is seen from the rim through the Y of LIBERTY, down through Liberty's nose, and across the field to 4 o'clock at the rim. Very scarce in this high grade. Population: 2 in 58, only 3 are finer (10/04). (PCGS# 1036)

The left foot of the T in LIBERTY is missing, the hair curl near the 1 in the date is open at its base, and a die break nearly joins the E in UNITED to the wreath. A faint die crack also connects the tops of NITE in UNITED. A nicely struck, slightly porous, and satiny piece with luminous medium brown and violet colors. Population: 14 in 63, 5 finer (10/04).
