1783 1C Washington Unity States Cent XF45 PCGS. Baker-1. Glossy purple-brown surfaces, with a hint of verdigris in protected areas. The portrait and wreath have rich details. The numerator and part of the date are slightly faint, partly due to the strike. The obverse has a trio of faint pinscratches. Struck from slightly rotated dies. 1867 1C MS65 Red NGC. Even though 9.8 million pieces were struck of this issue, it remains very elusive with both well preserved surfaces and original coloration--a pairing that is consistently difficult among all early Indian Cents. This piece is sharply struck on the obverse with lesser details apparent on the reverse. The glossy red surfaces show a lively intermingling of lilac-olive green coloration. Population: 10 in 65, 0 finer (7/02). (PCGS# 2090)

1872 1C MS65 Red and Brown NGC. Writing in 1992, Rick Snow suggests that many 1872 Cents were melted to provide copper for the Mint's 1873, 1874, and 1875 deliveries. Specialists have long recognized the conditionally rare status of this lower mintage date, and Gems that display any degree of original luster are always in demand. This is just such a coin, and both sides reveal considerable orange tinged luster. In fact, the obverse is predominantly lustrous, the medium brown patina being mottled in distribution on the reverse as well. The obverse exhibits sharp striking definition that is exceptional for this often poorly impressed date. The reverse is also appreciably bold over all features with the exception of those at the upper border. Otherwise pristine, the surfaces reveal a few small carbon flecks around the central obverse. (PCGS# 2104)

1960 1C Large Date Cent--On a Liberia 10C Planchet--MS62 NGC. An undoubtedly unique Mint error, this coin is generally well centered on the foreign planchet. The right peripheries, however, are off the flan, but all major design elements are readily evident (including the all-important date). Untoned save for a few whispers of golden iridescence, the bright surfaces are moderately abraded. This piece was the subject of a front page article in the July 24, 2001 issue of Numismatic News.

1866 5C Rays PR65 NGC. Well struck and beautifully preserved with silver-gray color and mild cameo contrast. Several of the stars are recut. Both sides have a prominent center dot. Although the proof mintage is certainly higher than the 200 pieces listed in the Guide Book, Gems are in extraordinary demand due to type collectors. Only a few dozen 1867 Rays Nickels were struck, which leaves the 1866 as the only affordable issue that features Rays on the reverse.
