1791 1C Washington Small Eagle Cent AU55 PCGS. Ex: Garrett. Baker-16, R.3. Deep mahogany-brown in color, this well made example has little evidence of rub and there are no relevant contact marks. A pleasing example of this popular issue, probably manufactured with the intention of securing a Federal coinage contract. Listed on page 59 of the 2003 Guide Book. Previously as lot 1795 in the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries catalog of The Garrett Collection, Part 4, sold on March 25, 1981, and cataloged in that sale as "1791 Washington small eagle cent. Baker-16. 194.7 grains. Copper...Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. It is a very deep brown, almost black color with prooflike surfaces. The details are exceptionally sharp."

1799 1C --Damaged, Corroded--ANACS. AG Details, Net Fair 2. S-189, High R.2. Extensive corrosion is seen on the dark brown surfaces of both sides, and numerous shallow scratches are evident on the main device and fields of the obverse. Some detail shows on the obverse portrait and the reverse wreath. The T and Y of LIBERTY are clear, as are the tops of the digits in the date, and most of the lettering on the reverse. Only the 1 in the fraction shows. An acceptable example of this legendary large cent.

1916 25C AU55 NGC. Among 20th Century silver rarities, the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter is at the top of the list for popularity. With an original mintage of only 52,000 pieces, survivors are eagerly sought at all levels of preservation. This example features a veil of thin gold toning on light silver-gray surfaces that retain a good amount of luster. The design elements are slightly better struck than is characteristic of the issue, though some of the typical softness is apparent on Liberty's head and inner shield, and in the stars on the gate. The reverse elements are stronger, as is typical. Only a few trivial abrasions and some wispy slide marks will be found on the relatively clean surfaces of this key date. (PCGS# 5704)

1872-CC $1--Tooled, Whizzed--ANACS. XF Details, Net VF20. A very rare Carson City date with a mintage of only 3,150 pieces. Bowers estimates that between 145 and 220 pieces have survived in all grades. This specimen is toned light to medium-gray in the fields, with the design elements being a lighter silver-gray. Minor obverse rim nicks are apparent between about 2 and 4 o'clock, and 7 and 9 o'clock. Numerous micro punches are seen in the right and left obverse fields, and several small to moderate abrasions occur on Liberty and the shield. The reverse is relatively clean, save for tooling marks in the upper fields. About one half of the stars show partial central detail. The letters LIRTY of LIBERTY on the obverse shield ribbon are strong, with the BE showing only partial definition. The motto on the reverse ribbon is bold.

1878 T$1 --Proof, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Only 900 pieces were coined of this proof only issue. Breen contends they are rarer than mintage figures suggest, noting that only 683 were sold, with the remaining number released into circulation. This example exhibits light to moderate hairlines beneath hints of faint gray and olive toning. The design elements are well brought out. Light contact marks are noted in the left obverse field, and in the reverse field beneath the eagle's right wing.

1879-CC $1 Capped Die MS61 PCGS. VAM-3. A Top 100 Variety. Considered by specialists to be a medium mintmark over a small mintmark, the "Capped Die" variety is notably scarcer than its regular mintmark counterpart. In a less enlightened prior generation of collectors, the Capped Die was shunned by some specialists because of the numerous mint-made die chips that surround the mintmark. A lustrous, nicely struck, and untoned Carson City Dollar with a clean reverse. The obverse possesses luster grazes that are characteristic of the MS61 grade. (PCGS# 7088)

1909-S $5 AU58 NGC. A richly detailed piece that has a clear mintmark, no noteworthy abrasions, and only a hint of rub on the cheekbone. Although the mintage of 297,200 pieces does not suggest rarity, in fact the 1909-S is quite scarce at the near-Mint level. S-mint Half Eagles apparently circulated to a greater extent than their Philadelphia and Denver Mint peers, perhaps due to the hard money tradition of the west.

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling Scratched, Tooled VF20 Uncertified. Noe-5, Breen-18. The obverse is struck a bit off-center while the reverse seems well centered. There is uneven wear evident on both sides, with deep overall gray and olive patina. There is some mildly noticeable tooling over the center of the obverse. Although dated 1652, it is believed that the Oak Tree coinage was produced in 1659 or early 1660. Listed on page 18 of the 2003Guide Book.

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet AU53 PCGS. Noe-8, Crosby 1b-D, R.3. 72.07 grains. The 'Monogram NE' variety, which has those two letters fused along the right upright of the N and the left upright of the E. The mint-made die break below the G in ENGLAND is well developed. A well struck and nicely struck piece on a large planchet. The legends are virtually fully intact, the very peak of the M in DOM might be off the flan. The lovely silver-gray fields are impressively devoid of contact, and the reverse periphery has only faint charcoal verdigris. The centers are faintly wavy, as made from a rocker press. Listed on page 18 of the 2004 Guide Book. Formerly as lot 741 in the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries sale of The Julius Turoff Collection, sold on October 1, 1976, and cataloged as "Sharply struck and boldly defined AU. Small clip at left. A truly outstanding specimen of this, one of the most desired of all early American coin issues. Worthy of a really generous bid!"

1760 1/2P Hibernia-Voce Populi Halfpenny VF30 PCGS. Breen-225, Nelson-7, Zelinka 8-F. Breen stated that this variety is "Very Rare" in his encyclopedia. He also noted that the obverse has no punctuation, however, a faint stop or period is apparent before the V in VOCE, both on this piece and on the Breen plate. This glossy chocolate-brown piece has attractive definition and verdigris-free surfaces. Both sides have a few tiny ticks, and a short scratch is evident near the legs of the seated figure. Listed on page 29 of the 2004 Guide Book. Previously as lot 361 in the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries catalog of The William R. Sieck Collection, sold on July 28, 1981, and cataloged in that sale as "Pleasing light brown surfaces. Remarkably smooth planchet. A very pleasing example of this issue."
