1916-S 50C MS66 NGC. Fully lustrous with golden toning deepening slightly at the obverse periphery and over most of the reverse. The matte-like, satin surfaces are nearly void of post-striking impairments. The strike, while not 100% full, is exceptional for this scarce first-year issue. The combination of first year of issue and obverse mintmark makes this date one of the most popular 20th century coins. The mintage is also among the lowest of the series. Only the 1921 and 1921-D keys and the hoarded 1938-D have lesser productions. Only two pieces have been certified finer by NGC and PCGS combined. Census: 11 in 66, 1 finer (2/06). (PCGS# 6568)

The lustrous green-gray surfaces have a slight degree of reddish-tan peripheral toning on the obverse and a light coating of speckled russet patina on the reverse. Carefully preserved and nearly mark-free. The '52-S is a slightly scarcer Franklin half at the MS65 Full Bell Lines grade level, and it is a definite rarity any finer. A product of the Denver Mint, sometime in the 1970s; the final digit of the date is not visible on this example due to centering. Lustrous silver surfaces with pale gold toning. The United States Mint in Philadelphia and Denver contracted with various governments to produce coinage, including the Philippine Islands.

1921 $1 Satin PR64 NGC. When examining this Peace dollar, the first things that are noticed are the satiny surfaces and the extremely sharp design features. Both sides have extensive die polishing lines, mostly in the fields but also on some of the broader parts of the design, such as Liberty's neck and cheek. Identified as a new variety known as VAM-1H, per a letter from Leroy Van Allen dated February 28, 2005: "Die polishing lines on obverse and reverse ... no significant die doubling on obverse or reverse. Fine elliptical polishing lines below jaw and below bottom of hair bun are nice die markers! Reverse has small die chip at top end of fourth ray below TF plus polishing lines between S and O and single line at bottom inside of R in AMERICA." Many other die polishing lines are visible in the fields on both sides, including those from E in WE to Liberty's neck. Mostly brilliant silver surfaces with pale rose and iridescent color. 1842-D $5 Small Date AU55 NGC. Variety 8-E. The 1842-D Small Date is relatively common in terms of its overall rarity, but the vast majority grade VF and XF. The issue is very scarce in lower AU, and rare in the upper range of this grade.

The Choice AU55 specimen presented in the current lot exhibits bright yellow-gold surfaces with considerable residual luster in the recessed areas. The design elements reveal nice definition, except for the usual softness in the hair curls around Liberty's ear. A few minute contact marks are scattered about, but the surfaces are not as heavily abraded as typically occurs on representatives of this issue. (PCGS# 8210)

1914-S $5 MS62 PCGS. Gold specialist David Akers (1988) notes that a former mini-hoard of Uncirculated coins makes MS60 to MS62 Indian Head half eagles possible to locate with just a little diligent searching. The MS62 example offered here is greenish and apricot-gold. The luster, while somewhat subdued, is better than often seen on this typically lackluster issue. The design elements are adequately brought up, and the mintmark displays some clarity instead of the normally poorly defined "blob" usually seen. Minute abrasions are apparent on the Indian's cheek and on the raised, exposed fields on both sides. PCGS has seen 20 examples grading finer (2/06). (PCGS# 8529)

1924 $20 MS66★ NGC. Literally thousands of the 1924 double eagles are extant. Even in Premium Gem, more than 8,000 examples have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined. In MS66 with the coveted Star designation, however, NGC has certified only 42 specimens, and 3 finer with Star (2/06). This specimen displays exceptionally smooth surfaces that emit glowing luster and apricot-gold patination imbued with traces of green. The design elements are nicely brought up, except that the Capitol building is a tad soft. A few minor surfaces marks are mentioned for accuracy, as are some hardly noticeable rim ticks, particularly on the obverse. A very pleasing specimen, certainly worthy of the Star designation. 1850 P1C One Cent, Judd-120 Restrike, Pollock-135, High R.7, MS62 NGC. This annular pattern design was an early attempt by the Mint to reduce the cumbersome size of the contemporary Large Cent. Struck in billon alloy (10% silver, 90% copper) with a plain edge. From the same dies as Judd-119, but the centers are not perforated. This rare pattern is believed to be a restrike; presumably the 'midnight minters' lacked either the equipment or incentive to perforate the planchets prior to coining. Smooth, subdued surfaces display olive-gray patination. The reverse features heavy die cracks. (PCGS# 11514)

1868 1C One Cent, Judd-609, Pollock-674, High R.7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. The design closely resembles that of the three cent nickel, except that the Roman numeral I instead of III is within the wreath. RI in AMERICA touch at the bases, and the base of the 1 in the date is repunched. Struck in copper with a plain edge. These patterns were issued in sets along with the 3 cent (Judd-618-Judd-620) and 5 cent (Judd-633-Judd-634). Probably fewer than a half dozen pieces are known of this design in copper. The obverse shows much remaining red color with a slight overlay of browning, while the reverse is more uniformly brown in color. On the left side of the obverse is either a semi-circular planchet flaw or traces of a guide line. (PCGS# 70821)

The heavy 5 in the date and the broadly repunched M in MASATHVSETS identify the Noe variety. Nicely centered, although the tops of a few upper left obverse letters are off the flan. 1760 1/2P Hibernia-Voce Populi Halfpenny, P Below Bust XF45 PCGS. Z. 14-L, N.11. In October 1976, Jerry Zelinka discussed the Voce Populi halfpenny series in The Colonial Newsletter. He used pieces from the Taylor collection to illustrate the varieties, including the present example. Zelinka 14-L features two double-punched letters, the P below the bust and the H in HIBERNIA. This sharp medium-brown piece is lightly granular and has no relevant marks. Listed on page 47 of the 2006 Guide Book.

A few minor laminations, as made, are seen on the central obverse. Double struck in the collar with marginal rotation of the piece relative to the dies between strikes. Evidence of the double strike is seen on the right side of the crown and opposite on the right side of the left fleur de lis. 1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. Newman 2-C, Hodder 2-A.3, R.3. An intricately detailed example of this coveted early American type. The obverse is richly toned in cobalt-blue, rose, and gold tints. The reverse offers consistent and somewhat deeper gunmetal-blue patina. Both sides are minutely etched, a bit more so on the obverse, which is somewhat bright from a mild past cleaning. A couple of small, rough, and inactive dark spots are noted: on the sundial, above the 6 in the date, inside the Georgia ring, and along the edge near the Virginia ring. A minor edge bump is outside the Rhode Island ring. All in all, an important example that demonstrates with full detail its theme of American independence and unity. Struck from widely rotated dies. The strike is characteristically weak at the center as usual for these small flan pieces, with the lower portions of the date off the edge. A pair of slender planchet flaws are found on the reverse, one at the top of the branch, the other on the eagle's chest. A scarce issue, listed on page 53 of the 2006 Guide Book. (PCGS# 841)
