1652 3PENCE Pine Tree Threepence--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. Noe-36, Crosby 2a-B, R.4. 16.2 grains. A minutely granular example that has a thin scratch near 2 o'clock on the obverse. The obverse is misaligned somewhat toward 9 o'clock, and the upper left obverse is wavy and lacks detail. Most of the tree and reverse design are bold. Listed on page 37 of the 2006 Guide Book.

1865 10C MS65 NGC. Fortin-101a. This example presents a conundrum for the variety collector. Fortin-101a has a recut date that can be seen here. This example also has a rusted obverse die as described by Fortin for his variety 102 in various die states. There is no trace of the clash marks of the 101b die state. Nearly every Gem survivor of this date is a proof, with business strikes in the top grades being extremely rare. In fact, only 25 finer examples have been certified by PCGS and NGC, and we suspect some of those are actually proofs in disguise. Although fully struck and brilliant with prooflike fields and lustrous devices, there is no question that this example is a business strike. Census: 6 in 65, 19 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 4641)

1854-S G$1 MS62 NGC. This is one of the most important gold dollars in the present sale for several reasons: it is a representative of the first year of operation at the San Francisco Mint, it is a low-mintage issue (14,632) with few survivors in Mint State, and it is the only San Francisco gold dollar with the Liberty Head design. Sharply struck and fully lustrous with brilliant and faintly reflective yellow-gold surfaces. Lightly abraded as expected for the grade, this is a lovely example and highly desirable for the reasons discussed above. Census: 24 in 62, 15 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 7527)

1855-C G$1 AU50 PCGS. Variety 9-K. This has become an infamous date in the gold dollar series, as it happens to be the date of the most poorly made products from the Charlotte Mint. These coins suffer from a plethora of minting and planchet problems, one of the most noteworthy being the inherent weakness in the center of the reverse. This specimen exhibits better-than-average definition on the LL of DOLLAR, but typical weakness shows on the 8 of the date. Heavy die clash marks are noted on the obverse. A number of wispy hairlines and a few pinscratches are visible on both sides. Population: 19 in 50, 30 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 7533)

1855-C G$1 AU55 PCGS. New Variety. Although Doug Winter's reference only discusses a single variety for this date, there are actually two different reverse dies identified from the small 9,803 coin mintage. This example is from the new reverse and not the one illustrated in Winter's book. The final date digit is almost entirely below the right base of the letter A above. The other variety has this digit further to the left and almost exactly centered below the letter A. After conducting a brief, informal survey of past auction records, it appears that this new variety is actually more common. The last 25 appearances of an 1855-C gold dollar in Heritage auctions reveals that 20 of those offerings were examples of this new variety, and only five were Winter's variety 9-K. This example has pleasing honey and light yellow-gold color with faint blue tones on the devices. The surfaces have the usual abrasions that are typical of most or all examples of this date. Prominent clash marks are visible on the obverse, with faint clash marks on the reverse. (PCGS# 7533)

1861-D G$1 --Scratched--ANACS. AU55 Details. Variety 12-Q. The 1861-D is the rarest D-mint gold dollar. All of the (unknown) mintage was struck by the CSA, in May of 1861. Rare in all grades, only 55-65 pieces are believed extant today, with 22-25 coins estimated to have survived in the various grades of AU, and another dozen or so in mint condition. This piece is well preserved overall and shows noticeable amounts of mint luster around the devices. Otherwise, the surfaces display the usual irregular definition on the obverse. A near-vertical scrape is located to the right of the 1 on the reverse, this being the most prominent defect we see on this piece. Rich green-gold coloration with just a touch of reddish patina.
